SEPTEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

Saturday 30th September.

Friday 29th September 2017.

Minsmere - Yellow-browed Warbler present in the sluice bushes though generally elusive + 2 juvenile Little Stint on the scrape.

Bawdsey - A Radde's Warbler was found shortly after 17:00hrs in Sea Buckthorn by the car park at East Lane.

Felixstowe - The RED-THROATED PIPIT continues to show well on & off at Landguard + 2 Common Redstart. (photo Bill Baston).


Thursday 28th September.

Minsmere - Pec Sand again on East scrape late afternoon + 8 Little Stints.

Thorpeness - 1+ Yellow-browed Warbler just North of the allotments.

Slaughden - Great Northern Diver South offshore at 07:45hrs.

Orfordness - Richard's Pipit on the NT reserve.

Bawdsey - Common Redstart & Firecrest at East Lane.

Felixstowe - The RED-THROATED PIPIT continued to show well on the common at Landguard today + 2 Common Redstart & Tree Pipit noted. (photo John Richardson).

Wednesday 27th September.

Lowestoft Area - Yellow-browed Warbler still along the disused railtrack at Corton.

Minsmere - Pectoral Sand on East scrape + 8 Little Stints & Curlew Sand.

Orfordness - A Raddes Warbler was trapped on the NT reserve + Yellow-browed Warbler.

Aldeburgh - 2 Little Stint, Redstart, Whinchat & Tree Pipit over. (photo Mark Cornish).

Bawdsey - Firecrest's noted at East Lane and the picnic site.

Felixstowe - A RED-THROATED PIPIT was found on the common at Landguard at 09:45hrs and remained on site all day. A 1st winter male Red backed Shrike was found along the river wall at the ferry mid afternoon.


Tuesday 26th September.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Yellow-browed Warblers seen today, 1 in Sparrows Nest Park and the other at Corton disused railway.

Minsmere - 3 Curlew Sand & 5 Little Stint on the scrape + Firecrest in the sluice bushes.

Sizewell - Yellow-browed Warbler in sycamore's in front of Sizewell A.

Thorpeness - Yellow-browed Warbler on the common.

Aldeburgh - 3 Little Stints still on Town Marsh + Tree Pipit, 2 Redstart, 2 Spot Flys, 6 Whinchat, Brambling & Hobby noted around the town.

Bawdsey - Firecrest along the concrete track.

Lackford - Black Tern still over the sailing lake.

Monday 25th September.

Minsmere - Juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper on the konik field at 18:05hrs then flew on to the scrape, also juvenile Red-necked Phalarope, 4 Little Stint & juvenile Curlew Sand on the scrape. Firecrest at the sluice bushes.

Thorpeness - Ring Ouzel Firecrest seen on the common + Snow Bunting on the beach.

Shingle Street - Spot Fly & Firecrest noted.

Bawdsey - Spot Fly & Firecrest at the picnic site.

Felixstowe - Yellow-browed Warbler rptd in brambles by the Manor Road car park at 11:50hrs.

Stour Estuary - Black Tern on the estuary from Stutton ness.

Lackford - Black Tern on the sailing lake though mobile.

Sunday 24th September.

Southwold - Phalarope sp offshore prior to 08:40hrs + Black Tern. Pied Fly in the SE corner of the campsite.

Walberswick - Juvenile Red-necked Phalarope still on pool on North field.

Minsmere - Juvenile Red-necked Phalarope still on East scrape + 3 Little Stint.

Aldeburgh - 2 Honey Buzzards South at 11:05hrs. 3 juvenile Little Stints on Town Marsh + 4 Whinchat. (photo Mark Cornish).

Orfordness - Common Redstart & 5 Whinchat on the NT reserve.

Shingle Street - 3 Short-eared Owls.

Bawdsey - 2 Whinchat on the marshes.

Saturday 23rd September.

Covehithe - No sign of the juvenile Red-necked Phalarope but 3 Little Stints on the broad (photo John Richardson).

Walberswick - Juvenile Red-necked Phalarope in North fields at 17:40hrs.

Minsmere - Juvenile Red-necked Phalarope still on East scrape + 3 Little Stint.

Aldeburgh - Spot Red Hazelwood Marshes + Whinchat on Town Marsh.

Sizewell - 10 Little Gull offshore.

Bawdsey - Pied Fly + Common Redstart near the quay.

Friday 22nd September.

Covehithe - A juvenile Red-necked Phalarope (photo David Borderick top and Andrew Moon) was showing very well on the board as were 2 Little Stints today. (photo John Richardson).

Minsmere - The juvenile Red-necked Phalarope remains on the scrape + 4 Little Stint & 2 Curlew Sands present.

Sizewell - 8 Little Gulls offshore.

Felixstowe - Pied Fly Adastral Close opposite the waste recycling centre.

Thursday 21st September.

Minsmere - Juvenile Red-necked Phalarope still viewable on East scrape + 2 Little Stint.

Felixstowe - Yellow-browed Warbler seen in poplars behind the Obs at LBO.

Wednesday 20th September.

Benacre - Juvenile Little Stint still on the broad.

Covehithe - 3 Little Stints on the broad + 3 Brambling over.

Southwold - Pied Fly seen in burnt gorse by the disused rail-line.

Tuesday 19th September.

Lowestoft Area - Pied Fly & Common Redstart at Ness Point.

Benacre - Juvenile Little Stint still on the broad.

Orfordness - 1st winter Red-breasted Flycatcher trapped and ringed on the NT reserve.

Shingle Street - 2 Whinchat present.

Monday 18th September.

Minsmere - Juvenile Red-necked Phalarope still on the scrape + Black-throated Diver seen offshore.

Thorpeness - Long-tailed Skua offshore + Pied Fly at the disused caravan park.

Shingle Street - Wryneck still opposite the 1st car park though remains elusive in the long grass.

Sunday 17th September.

Lowestoft Area - Pied Flycatchers were seen on North Denes 100 yards South of Links Hill & in the West corner of Kirkley cemetery.. Turtle Dove in private garden at Hulver Street.

Southwold - probable Long-tailed Skua North at 07:50hrs.

Saturday 16th September.

Minsmere - The 1st winter Citrine Wagtail reported though elusive + juvenile Red-necked Phalarope on East scrape.

Aldeburgh - Wryneck seen on private land with no general access. Spot Red on Hazelwood Marshes. 2 Spot Reds on Aldeburgh Town Marshes + 11 Pink-footed Geese NW. (photo Mark Cornish)

Fekixstowe - 11 Pink-footed Geese North over LBO.

Friday 15th September.

Minsmere - 1st winter Citrine Wagtail still present on the scrape although remains mobile & elusive.

Sizewell - 6 Little Gull off the rigs.

Shingle Street - Wryneck still by the 1st car park though elusive + Osprey South at 11:00hrs.

Felixstowe - 3 Woodlark South over LBO.

Hollesley - Yellow-browed Warbler heard calling in frequently in hedgerow along Reade Field.

Long Melford - 2 Raven high over Melford Hall before drifting off East at 11:35hrs.

Thursday 14th September.

Benacre - Long-tailed Skua North 11:45hrs. Little Stint still on the broad + 1w Arctic Tern noted.

Covehithe - Merlin + 3 Hobby noted.

Southwold - 5 Long-tailed Skuas seen offshore (1 North at 14:48hrs, 1 South at 15:50hrs & 3 South at 16:47hrs).

Minsmere - 1st winter Citrine Wagtail still present on West scrape though mobile.

Thorpeness - 3 Long-tailed Skua offshore early afternoon.

Slaughden - 3 Long-tailed Skua, 8 Arctic Skua, 12 Great Skua & 9 Skua sp seen offshore between 15:30-18:00hrs.

Shingle Street - Wryneck still by the 1st car park, offshore an Iceland Gull was seen to come in off + 4 Short-eared Owls.

Ipswich - Honey Buzzard seen SW over Dales Road at 13:30hrs.

Wednesday 13th September.

Benacre - Juvenile Little Stint still on the broad.

Minsmere - 1st winter Citrine Wagtail still on the scrape though mobile.

Shingle Street - Wryneck still by the 1st carpark.

Felixstowe - Long-tailed Skua seen sat on the sea off Landguard at 07:40hrs

Tuesday 12th September.

Lowestoft Area - Juvenile Honey Buzzard over Oulton Marshes at 07:17hrs then again at 08:25hrs + Sooty Shearwater North off Corton.

Benacre - The Wryneck continues to show by the sluice + juv Little Stint remains on the broad.

Minsmere - 1st winter Citrine Wagtail still present and viewable from North hide.

Shingle Street - Wryneck seen by the tennis court.

Trimley Marshes - Pec Sand still on the SWT reserve + 6 Pink-footed Geese.

Lakenheath - Osprey South early morning.


Monday 11th September.

Benacre - Wryneck reported just North of the sluice at 07:20hrs. Juvenile Little Stint on the broad.

Minsmere - 1st winter Citrine Wagtail again on the scrape today but mobile as ever. (photo Andrew Moon)

Alde Estuary - 8 Spoonbill Hazelwood Marshes.


Sunday 10th September.

Benacre - The Wryneck was again present and showing very well 150 yards North of the sluice from 12:30hrs. Juv Little Stint still on the broad. (photo David Borderick)

Covehithe - Tree Pipit South.

Minsmere - The 1st winter Citrine Wagtail was again present on the scrape from 08:55hrs until 14:45hrs when flushed by a Sparrowhawk, but did return at 17:30hrs. (photo Darren Underwood)

Alde Estuary - 2 Spoonbill at Hazelwood Marsh.

Stour Estuary - 3 Osprey still from Stutton ness.


Saturday 9th September.

Benacre - A confiding Wryneck was found by the sluice this morning and remained throughout the day and often showing well. The Juvenile Little Stint remained on the broad.

Blythburgh - Osprey still present on the estuary.

Minsmere - A mobile 1st winter Citrine Wagtail was discovered briefly on East scrape at 11:00hrs then seen again at 11:50hrs before going missing for over 4 hours for it to re-appear shortly after 16:00hrs where it showed well until 18:57hrs then flew to the reedbed behind West hide presumably to roost. Alde Estuary - 13 Spoonbill + juvenile Curlew Sand at Hazelwood Marsh & 9 Whinchat on Town Marshes.

Trimley Marshes - Pec Sand still on the winter flood.

Stour Estuary - 3 Osprey still at Stutton ness.

Friday 8th September.

Blythburgh - Osprey still on the estuary.

Alde Estuary - 9 Spoonbill Hazelwood Marsh.

Hollesley - Little Stint on the scrape + juv LRP.

Trimley Marshes - Pec Sand still on the winter flood.

Stour Estuary - 2 Osprey still at Stutton ness.

Thursday 7th September.

Blyth Estuary - Osprey again seen on the estuary throughout the day.

Alde Estuary - 2 Spoonbill on Hazelwood Marshes.

Havergate - 4 Curlew Sands on the RSPB island + Bonxie.

Trimley Marshes - Juvenile Pec Sand still on the winter flood.

Stour Estuary - 2 Osprey still at Stutton mill.

Wednesday 6th September.

Lowestoft Area - Wood Sand on Carlton Marshes.

Aldeburgh - 2 Whinchat on Town Marshes.

Shingle Street - 4 Whinchats + 3 Swift South.

Bawdsey - Spot Fly along Ferry Road.

Felixstowe - A juvenile Dotterel was found in fields just past the 1st stile at the ferry at 13:00hrs and was then flushed along with Golden Plovers at 13:15hrs.

Stour Estuary - 3 Osprey at Stutton ness.

Tuesday 5th September.

Lowestoft Area - Wood Sand on the scrape at Carlton Marsh.

Dunwich - A Storm Petrel was seen North offshore from the cliffs at 10:20hrs. A Great Egret was viewable from the coastguard cottages on Minsmere North Marsh.

Aldeburgh - No sign of the Wryneck early morning on Town Marshes but 4 Whinchat.

Hollesley - Little Stint on the scrape.

Bawdsey - Spot Fly at East Lane.

Felixstowe - An Ortolan Bunting was flushed from behind the Observatory at 07:20hrs and appeared to fly over the museum, despite searching the bird was not relocated.

Trimley Marshes - The juvenile Pec Sand continues to show on the winter flood.

Stour Estuary - 2 Osprey seen from Stutton Mill.

Monday 4th September.

Benacre - Spotted Redshank on the broad + 2 YLG.

Minsmere - 5 Black Tern South offshore.

Sizewell - 12 Little Gulls off the rigs.

Lowestoft Area - Garganey on Carlton Marshes.

Benacre - Little Stint on the broad + Garganey & YL Gull.

Reydon - 2 Whinchat on St. Felix Marshes.

Sizewell - Black Tern off the rigs + 20 Little Gull.

Alde Estuary - 2 Osprey over Hazelwood Marshes at 10:10hrs + 7 Spoonbill. (photo Mark Cornish).

Slaughden - 8 Arctic Skuas + Bonxie noted offshore.

Havergate - 28 Spoonbill on the RSPB reserve + Osprey South at 14:10hrs & juv Curlew Sand noted.

Saturday 2nd September.

Covehithe - A Grasshopper Warbler was discovered in clifftop fields this morning + Quail reportably flushed by a dog walker.

Havergate - 28 Spoonbill on the island + Osprey over.

Hollesley - The 5 Ruddy Shelduck were again present on the scrape + juv Little Stint & juv Curlew Sand present, also a juv Arctic Tern was offshore. A Wood Sand was trapped at a private ringing site in the village.

Shingle Street - 2 Whinchat near the tennis court.

Felixstowe - An Ortolan Bunting was to fly from within the Observatory at Landguard at c09:30hrs before alighting briefly on the common near the sea-watching hide, then moving on with the Linnet flock and no further sign, also Common Redstart

Trimley Marshes - A Pectoral Sandpiper was seen on the winter flood this afternoon.

Friday 1st September.

Alde Estuary - 20 Spoonbill over Hazelwood Marshes + Osprey South at 16:45hrs. 5 Whinchat on Town Marhes.

Hollesley - 5 Ruddy Shelduck were discovered on the scrape at Hollesley Marshes early morning and remained until 18:00hrs when flew off high North + 2 Garganey, juv Little Stint & 4 juv Curlew Sands on the reserve.

Felixstowe - Black Redstart by the ferry boatyard. 4 Tree Sparrow noted by the radar tower at Landguard.
