APRIL HIGHLIGHTS

Tuesday 30th April.

Lowestoft Area - An adult WHITE-TAILED EAGLE was seen South over Carlton Marshes just prior to 14:00hrs, then seen high drifting NE over Covehithe area between 17:05-17:37hrs.

Southwold - A Spoonbill was seen on the flash early evening.

Minsmere - A SAVI'S WARBLER still Island Mere + Ring Ouzel still on North field + Turtle Dove on Whin Hill.

Orford - A male Pied Flycatcher was present in the village this evening.

Boyton - Spoonbill reported on the flash today.

Bawdsey - Short-eared Owl noted between East Lane - Shingle Street this aternoon.

Woodbridge - The male RED-FOOTED FALCON continues to show well at the eastern end of the disused run way. (photo Peter Lakey)

Monday 29th.

Dunwich - A possible BLACK SCOTER was present offshore amongst the Common Scoter flock though distant. (photo Mark Smiles)

Minsmere - 2 SAVI'S WARBLER'S continued to be heard from Is.mere, also 2 Spoonbill North over Bittern hide, 2 Ring Ouzel on North field & Wood Sand on the scrape.

Boyton - Male Whinchat Boyton Marsh + 4 Yellow Wagtail.

Woodbridge - The male RED-FOOTED FALCON was again present and showing well at the eastern end of the disused runway at the Woodbridge airbase. (photo Gary Mowles).

Sunday 28th.

Lowestoft Area - Short-eared Owl Carlton Marshes + Ring Ouzel. A Quail was seen in flight East over the A12 at Frostenden at 08:20hrs.

Southwold - Wood Sandpiper on the flash this afternoon and still present this evening.

Walberswick - Spoonbill on Tinkers Marsh early morning before flying West down the Blyth Estuary + Spotted Redshank

Westleton - 2 Turtle Dove on the heath today.

Minsmere - SAVI'S WARBLER from Island Mere singing and showing occasionally + Ring Ouzel still from North Wall.

Woodbridge - The male RED-FOOTED FALCON was again present and showing well at the East end of the now derelict USAF airbase + Hobby over. (photo Lee Woods). Take the B1084 Woodbridge to Orford Road then take right turning sign-posted to Rendlesham Forest Centre.

Saturday 27th.

Lowestoft Area - An ALPINE SWIFT that skirted the NE coast of Norfolk, entered Suffolk airspace at c09:40hrs as it was seen low South over Corton, the bird was then seen South over Links Hill just offshore at 09:50hrs. Ring Ouzel Corton new sewage works. Spoonbill Kessingland sluice.

Minsmere - 1+ SAVI'S WARBLER still singing from Island Mere. Great Egret + Spoonbill on the reserve.

Woodbridge - An adult male RED-FOOTED FALCON was present by the Tangham end of Woodbridge airfield at 15:15hrs.

Lackford SWT - 9 Arctic Tern noted from Steggalls hide at 13:00hrs.

Friday 26th.

Lowestoft Area - Turtle Dove seen along Sandy Lane, Hulver.

Southwold - A TAWNY PIPIT was seen over Town Marshes early morning before ditching in field by the derelict windmill on the North side of the Blyth Estuary. The bird was then seen again as it flew to fields on the North side of the Blyth between the bridleway across the marshes and Hen Reedbeds + Merlin seen.

Minsmere - 2 SAVI'S WARBLER still audible from Island Mere + 2 Turtle Dove. A RED-RUMPED SWALLOW was rptd over North wall at 07:38hrs + Ring Ouzel & 2 Turtle Dove noted.

Alde Estuary - A DOTTEREL was found this morning at an undisclosed site on the estuary. The bird spooked by a Crow and flew off in Southerly direction. (photo Mark Cornish).

Felixstowe - Ring Ouzel still LBO + Whinchat.

Alton Water - 2 Arctic Tern briefly on the reservoir before heading off West.

Thursday 25th.

Lowestoft Area - Wood Sand still on Herringfleet Marshes.

Minsmere - The 2 SAVI'S WARBLER can still be heard and occasionally seen from Island Mere + Ring Ouzel on North field.

Woodbridge - Ring Ouzel on the disused airfield, near-by the Ring Ouzel remains on Sutton Heath.

Felixstowe - Ring Ouzel & Whinchat on the common at LBO + Velvet Scoter North.

Lakenheath - 2 Great Egret on the RSPB reserve + 2 Garganey.

Wednesday 24th.

Lowestoft Area - Yellow-browed Warbler still by Gunton church + Firecrest.

Southwold - Male Whinchat on raised path behind the flash this afternoon.

Walberswick - Single Twite on saltings pool Tinkers Marsh + Spot Red & Grasshopper Warbler.

Westleton - 2 Ring Ouzel still on the heath.

Minsmere - 1 BLACK-WINGED STILT viewable from the wildlife lookout late afternoon. 2 SAVI'S WARBLER from Island Mere early morning + Grasshopper Warbler & Firecrest. (photo David Bryant).

Shingle Street - Pied Flycatcher in SE corner of the secret garden

Felixstowe - Ring Ouzel still at LBO + 2 Whinchats.

East Bergholt - Red Kite over the village early aternoon.

Elmsett - RAVEN SW over the village at 17:47hrs.

Great Livermere - 2 Garganey (1 drake) still on Livermere Lake.

Tuesday 23rd.

Lowestoft Area - Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still Herringfleet Marshes + Wood Sandpiper. A Yellow-browed Warbler was heard calling from Gunton Wood/churchyard this evening, near-by 3 Common Redstart (1 male) along the old railtrack.

Westleton - 2 Ring Ouzel on the heath.

Minsmere - The 2 BLACK-WINGED STILTS remained on the reserve but as yesterday remained rather mobile. The SAVI'S WARBLER continues to sing from Is.mere. Ring Ouzel noted on North field.

Great Livermere - 2 Garganey (1 drake) on Livermere Lake though elusive.

Monday 22nd.

Lowestoft Area - Suffolk's 2nd record of IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF was found this morning along the slope along North Denes jusy by the oval tennis courts/cricket pitch. The bird remained vocal and showing well to around 15:00hrs then moved on ? (photo Brian Small). Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still Herringfleet Marshes.

Westleton - A BLACK-WINGED STILT was seen South over the heath at 07:15hrs + 2 Ring Ouels.

Minsmere - 2 BLACK-WINGED STILTS were present on the reserve throughout the day though were very mobile. SAVI'S WARBLER again from Island Mere and Ring Ouzel on North field.

Boyton - Spoonbill Boyton Marshes.

Hollesley - Female Merlin + Red Kite noted over the reserve at Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Sutton - Ring Ouzel still in the SE corner of the common just past the first gate past Gobblecock Cottage

Felixstowe - BLACK KITE South over the ferry at 14:23hrs. 2 Black Redstart seen at LBO.

Ipswich - Red Kite SW over Stoke Park at 09:30hrs.

East Bergholt - Red Kite over the village at 10:00hrs.

Great Livermere - 3 Black Terns briefly at Livermere Lake + 6 Little Gulls & Garganey present.

Great Barton - 2 Common Crane over the A11 Fiveways roundabout at 14:50hrs

Sunday 21st.

Lowestoft Area - Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still Herringfleet Marshes, Somerleyton. Osprey North over Stirrups Lane, Corton. Ringtail Hen Harrier over Carlton Marshes SWT at 11:50hrs.

Walberswick - Short-eared Owl Tinkers Marsh.

Westleton - Turtle Dove seen in the village this morning.

Minsmere - Great Egret early morning then over South levels + Jack Snipe on Is.mere.

North Warren - Spoonbill South over the main reedbed at 06:40hrs + Grasshopper Warbler reeling in the NW corner.

Snape - Great Egret & Little Gull still on Botany Marsh

Hollesley - Adult Little Gull Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Sutton - Male Ring Ouzel in the SE coner of the common.

Martlesham - A WHITE STORK was seen SE at midday.

Felixstowe - Water Pipit briefly at LBO.

Trimley - Great Egret seen on Loompit Lake at 11:25hrs previously on the SWT reserve at Trimley Marshes. (photo Will Brame)

Ipswich - WHITE STORK South over Ipswich hospital at 11:47hrs.

Cavenham - GOSHAWK seen over the heath early morning + male Merlin near-by along the A1101 near Lackford.

Huntingfield - Red Kite NE over the village at 08:30hrs.

Saturday 20th.

Lowestoft Area - Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still Herringfleet Marsh, Somerleyton. Osprey over Goose Green nursery shortly after midday.

Walberswick - 2 Spotted Redshank on Tinkers Marsh + 2 LRP.

Aldringham Walks - Male Common Redstart noted.

Thorpeness - Firecrest seen at the old caravan park.

North Warren - Great Egret on South Marsh + female type Black Redstart along the old railtrack.

Saxmundham - A HONEY BUZZARD was rptd over Saxon Way at 15:00hrs.

Snape - Great Egret on Botany Marshes + Little Gull.

Boyton - Red Kite seen over the marshes at 10:15hrs.

Melton - Red Kite North over Melton Park at 14:10hrs.

Waldringfield - The first Common Swift of the year was today noted over the Moon and Sixpence campsite.

Lackford - 2 Black Terns seen at the SWT reserve from Bess's hide.

Friday 19th.

Lowestoft Area - A ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD was seen just prior to 08:00hrs at Belton South of Breydon Water. Great Egret over Carlton Marshes this morning. Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still Herringfleet Marsh, Somerleyton. 2 Common Crane over Oulton Broad early afternoon.

Westleton - No sign of the SUBALPINE WARBLER sp on the heath this morning. A BLACK KITE was seen North over the heath at 16:12hrs

Minsmere - The SAVI'S WARBLER was seen and heard from Island Mere + Great Egret noted.

Hollelsey - A (Blue-ringed) GOSHAWK was seen over Upper Hollesley Common at 10:15hrs.

Shingle Street - Short-eared Owl seen at 18:10hrs.

Bramford - 2 Black Tern present over the main fishing lake at Suffolk Water Park, Bramford at 09:08hrs but no sign late morning.

Micklemere - A Temminck's Stint was found on the scrape at 14:20hrs and viewable from the hide.

Great Livermere - Little Gull still present.

Mildenhall - A Ring Ouzel was seen on Foxhole Heath near the Rackheath entrance off B1112.

Thursday 18th.

Lowestoft Area - The long staying drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL was again noted on Herringfleet Marshes, Somerleyton + 4 Water Pipits present. A HOODED CROW was seen on the North Denes prior to 08:05hrs then flew North. 5 Common Crane were seen SE over Somerleyton at 11;20hrs.

Westleton - A SUBALPINE WARBLER sp was seen and photographed on the heath at 11:15hrs (No further details).

Aldeburgh - 2 Water Pipit on Town Marshes.

Boyton - Ringtail Hen Harrier & Short-eared Owl seen at Boyton Marshes.

Hollesley - 2 RAVEN over Upper Hoolesley Common.

Felixstowe - 2 Black Redstart still at LBO.

Alton Water - The fsp Slavonian Grebe continues to show by Lemons Hill bridge.

Great Livermere - 14 Little Gull (12 adult) Livermere Lake.

Lakenheath - 2 Garganey (1 drake) still at the RSPB reserve.


Wednesday 17th.

Lowestoft Area - Water Pipit on Oulton Marshes.

Walberswick - 4 Great Egrets on Dingle Marshes.

Minsmere - The SAVI'S WARBLER was again heard from Island Mere this morning. Short-eared Owl just North of the sluice, Ring Ouzel by the discovery centre & ringtail Hen Harrier noted.

Westleton - Black Redstart on the heath South of Dunwich Road late afternoon.

Shingle Street - Great Egret noted + Grasshopper Warbler just South of the martello tower.

Felixstowe - Ring Ouzel seen at LBO + 2 Black Redstart

Trimley Marsh SWT - 1st summer Spoonbill on the summer flood.

Alton Water - A near full summer plumage Slavonian Grebe as seen by Lemons Hill bridge this afternoon.

Great Livermere - Little Gull Livermere Lake.

Tuesday 16th.

Lowestoft Area - Short-eared Owl Carlton Marsh SWT. 2 Firecrest along the disused railtrack at Corton. Male Common Redstart Gunton railtrack this evening.

Great Livermere - 2 Little Gull (both adults) still on Livermere Lake.

Monday 15th.

Lowestoft Area - The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL continues to show on Herringfleet Marshes Somerleyton.

Minsmere - Redhead Smew on Island Mere.

Hollesley - 2 Garganey (1 drake) still Hollesley Marsh RSPB. Cuckoo seen on Upper Hoolesley Common.

Felixstowe - Ring Ouzel reported at Landguard.

Great Livermere - 2 Little Gull still Livermere Lake.

Lakenheath - Great Egret Lakenheath Fen RSPB.

Sunday 14th.

Lowestoft Area - The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL remain on Herringfleet Marshes, Somerleyton.

Southwold - Red Kite over the sewage works.

Walberswick - Single Twite still on saltmarsh at Tinkers Marsh.

Hollesley - 2 Garganey (1 drake) still viewable in channel from the car park at the RSPB reserve.

Shingle Street - 2 Water Pipit on pool just South of Battery Cottage this morning.

Great Livermere - The 2w KUMLIENS GULL was seen in the evening Gull roost + 5 Caspian Gull & 2 Little Gull on Livermere Lake.

Saturday 13th.

Lowestoft Area - Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still Herringfleet Marsh + 9 Water Pipit.

Thorington - Great Grey Shrike still present this evening

Orfordness - ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD still on the NT reserve.

Hollesley - 2 Garganey (1 drake) in channel opposite the RSPB channel.

Shingle Street - The long-staying 4 Shorelark were again seen just South of Battery Cottage at 10:00hrs then flew South towards East Lane. (photo Barry Woodhouse)

Friday 12th.

Lowestoft Area - The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL continues to show on Herringfleet Marshes Somerleyton + 8 Water Pipits noted.

Blackheath - Great Grey Shrike seen 3/4ml SE of the village by Haels Lane c100 yards West from A12 junction.

Walberswick - A BLACK KITE was seen at 11:36hrs.

Minsmere - Redhead Smew still on the reserve.

Hollesley - 2 Garganey (1 drake) still remain on Hollesley Marsh RSPB

Great Livermere - Little Gull at Liveremere Lakes.

Lakenheath - 2 Garganey (1 drake) on the RSPB reserve.

Thursday 11th.

Wrentham - A male Black Redstart seen at the end of Old Hill Close at village green at 17:00hrs

A WHITE-TAILED EAGLE was seen at the following locations and times;

  • East over Blyth Estaury at 09:27hrs
  • North over Reydon Church at 10:11hrs
  • North over Covehithe at 10:32hrs
  • North over Rookery Close, Oulton Broad at 11:10hrs

Minsmere - A Green-ringed WHITE STORK seen circling over the car park before drifting North at 11:10hrs

Sizewell - WHITE STORK low over Sizewell Belts at 10:40hrs heading West.

Westleton - A Nightingale was heard singing intermittently on the heath

Boyton - Single Water Pipit at Boyton Marshes.

Hollesley - 2 Garganey (1 drake) in the channel opposite the RSPB car park + 7 Water Pipit reported on the flooded meadow prior to 08:00hrs only.

Great Livermere - 10 Little Gull still Livermere Lake late morning.

Lakenheath - Great Egret at Lakenheath Fen RSPB + 2 Garganey (1 drake).

Wednesday 10th.

Walberswick - A Hobby was reported North offshore at 06:55hrs.

Minsmere - 3 Spoonbill South over the reserve this afternoon + Redhead Smew still present.

Felixstowe - Black Redstart LBO.

Trimley SWT - No sign of the pair of Garganey.

Great Livermere - 2 ringtail Hen Harriers were seen Broadwater Lake + 7 Little Gulls remain.

Tuesday 9th.

Bawdsey - Spoonbill NE over Bawdsey Marshes at 13:50hrs.

Deben Estuary - Short-eared Owl seen over Rosier Marshes, Kingsfleet, near-by White Wagtail on Falkenham Marshes + Black Redstart at Felixstowe Ferry.

Trimley - 2 Garganey (1 drake) on the SWT reserve.

Playford - Great Egret seen on marshland early evening before flying North.

Alton Water - A summer-plumaged Slavonian Grebe was seen off Larchwood early afternoon.

Monday 8th.

Lowestoft Area - The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL remain on Herringfleet Marshes but no sign of the male WHITE-SPOTTED BLUETHROAT. Osprey SSW of Flixton at St.Cross South Elmham.

Minsmere - Redhead Smew still present + Jack Snipe from Island Mere.

Walberswick - GLOSSY IBIS still on North Marsh

Aldeburgh - Spoonbill South over the town at 09:50hrs.

Boyton - Drake Garganey still present.

Hollesley - Drake Garganey still Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Bawdsey - Black Redstart at East Lane.

Orwell Estuary - Male Hen Harrier over Levington Marina around midday.

Belstead - Jack Snipe along Bobbits Lane from viewing screen.

Knettishall - Common Crane over Knettishall Heath at 09:45hrs.


Sunday 7th.

Lowestoft Area - Both the drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL and male WHITE-SPOTTED BLUETHROAT remain at Herringfleet Marsh Somerleyton with the latter being very elusive. 2 Black Redstart in the SLP compound.

Southwold - Firecrest singing from the paddock adjacent to the sewage works.

Walberswick - 2 Twite still on the saltings at Tinkers Marsh.

Minsmere - SAVI'S WARBLER Island Mere fron 18:50hrs (heard only)

Shingle Street - Short-eared Owl again + ringtail Hen Harrier.

Felixstowe - Ring Ouzel seen along the butts at LBO + Short-eared Owl. Firecrest seen at the Customs House.

Saturday 6th.

Lowestoft Area - A male WHITE-SPOTTED BLUETHROAT was discovered at Herringfleet Marsh, Somerleyton midway between Duke's Head pub + mill at base of bank though generally elusive at TM.468.974 + drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still present.

Southwold - Firecrest at the sewage works + drake Goosander North offshore.

Minsmere - Redhead Smew still from North hide + Jack Snipe on Island Mere.

Havergate - 1st winter Caspian Gull + ringtail Hen Harrier.

Hollesley - 2 Garganey (1 drake) on flooded meadow opposite RSPB car park.

Felixstowe - Probable SIBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF at LBO + 2 Ring Ouzel, Firecrest & Woodlark noted.

Barham - Lesser-spotted Woodpecker noted with Shrublands Park.

Friday 5th.

Walberswick - GLOSSY IBIS again on North field West of harbour car park. 2 Twite & single Water Pipit on Tinkers Marsh.

Minsmere - 2 Sandwich & Common Tern on the scrape.

Boyton - Drake Garganey on Boyton Marshes + 5 Pink-footed Geese.

Hollesley - 2 Garganey (1 drake) on Hollesley Marshes.

Shingle Street - 4 Shorelark 300 yards South of Battery Cottage.

Thursday 4th.

Lowestoft Area - SIBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF still Leathes Ham viewed from footpath adjacent to the tennis courts.

Hollesley - 2 Garganey (1 drake) still on flooded meadow opposite the RSPB car park + Caspian Gull & Little Stint briefly on the scrape.

Shingle Street - Firecrest present + Woodcock.

Bawdsey - 4 Shorelark still East Lane. Firecrest seen at the quay picnic site.

Wednesday 3rd.

Boyton - 5 Pink-footed Geese still Boyton Marshes + White Wagtail.

Hollesley - Ringtail Hen Harrier over the scrape at the RSPB reserve + 2 Garganey (1 drake) on meadow opposite the car park & single Pink-footed Goose.

Bawdsey - 4 Shorelark still East Lane just North of the saline lagoon + Black Redstart.

Felixstowe - A Stone Curlew was discovered on the beach at LBO shortly after 18:00hrs

Bury St Edmunds - 5 Waxwing seen by the bus stop at 17:00hrs.

Tuesday 2nd.

Lowestoft Area - SIBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF still at Leathes Ham. A rather smart Snow Bunting was discovered in fields by The Hollies this morning and remained throughout the day. Firecrest by the sewage works.

Minsmere - A SAVI'S WARBLER was heard reeling this morning from Island Mere. 3 Smew (1 drake) on pool by North hide. 2 Jack Snipe on Island Mere.

North Warren - Great Egret on South Marsh then flew high North.

Boyton - Drake Garganey still Boyton Marsh RSPB.

Hollesley - 2 Garganey (1 drake) still Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Ufford - House Martin over the village.

Felixstowe - 2 Black Redstart at LBO.

Alton Water - Water Pipit seen along the water's edge of the reservoir between the main lemons hill car park and hides.

Cavenham - A drake Mandarin was a scarce sighting in the West of the county on Cavenham Pits.


The first real arrival of hirundines occurred today with Swallow, Sand Martin & House Martin all being noted.

Monday 1st.

Lowestoft Area - The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL was once again noted on Herringfleet Marsh, Somerleyton. SIBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF still at Leathes Ham along footpath adjacent to the tennis courts.

Minsmere - A male Ring Ouzel was present on Whin Hill (photo Andrew Moon). 2 Smew (1 drake) still on the reserve. A Firecrest was present near the old car park.

Boyton - Drake Garganey still Boyton Marshes + Black Redstart.

Bawdsey - The long-staying Shorelark (4 birds) remain at East Lane.

Felixstowe -  A Common Tern was seen at LBO (the earliest recorded sighting from this watchpoint by four days) + 2 Purple Sands on the point. 

Elmsett - RAVEN seen Williams Green heading towards Kersey.

Bury St Eds - 2 LRP Marshams housing development site on Tut Hill.

Lakenheath - 4 Great Egret on the RSPB reserve + 2 Garganey (1 drake).
