AUGUST HIGHLIGHTS

Friday 31st August.

Lowestoft Area - An elusive Barred Warbler present by the farm entrance to Beach Farm though very elusive. (photo Chris Darby). Cattle Egret seen again on the scrape at Carlton Marshes.

Minsmere - The Wryneck (photo Andrew Moon) was again seen by the sluice though generally elusive + 2 juv Curlew Sands on South scrape, Osprey & Great Egret noted.

Sizewell - 5 Little Gulls off the rigs + Black Redstart.

Aldeburgh - 4 Whinchat on Town Marshes.

Havergate - Spoonbill on the RSPB island + Spot Red & 2 juv Curl Sands.

Shingle Street - Common Redstart & 3 Whinchat.

Felixstowe - 5 Pied Flys at LBO + female Common Redstart.

Thursday 30th August.

Minsmere - A Wryneck was found near the sluice late morning + Curlew Sand on the scrape. (photo Mark Cornish).

Sizewell - Common & Black Redstart noted + 8 Little Gull offshore.

Thorpeness - Common Redstart at the old caravan park.

Alde Estury - Osprey seen fishing on the flooded marsh at Hazelwood + Spoonbill & 2 Turtle Dove. Garganey, 3 Red-crested Pochard & 6 Whinchat on Town Marshes. (photo Mark Cornish).

Bawdsey - Juvenile Garganey stlll on the 1st lagoon at East Lane.

Felixstowe - A TAWNY PIPIT (photo Stuart Smith) was discovered just after 09:30hrs on the common at LBO. The bird remained until late morning hen flew towards the roped off area and was subsequently lost to view + 2 Common Redstart noted.

Wednesday 29th August.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Pied Flys + 5 Whinchat between Pontins and Heathlands caravan park.

Covehithe - Pied Fly.

Southwold - Pied Flycatchers were noted at the sewage works (1) Denes (2) & Easton Bavents (2).

Minsmere - 2 Great Egrets & Pied Fly the highlights on the reserve.

Thorpeness - Pied Fly & Whinchat noted.

Bawdsey - Juv Garganey still on the 1st lagoon at East Lane.

Felixstowe - 2 Pied Flys present at LBO + 6 Whinchat.

Tuesday 28th August.

Lowestoft Area - Cattle Egret still Burgh Castle Marshes.

Blyth Estuary - Adult Curlew Sand.

Walberswick - Juv Caspian Gull along the harbour mouth. 4 Whinchat at Tinkers Marsh.

Havergate - A juvenile Red-necked Phalarope was present on the RSPB reserve at 11:00hrs.

Shingle Street - Whinchat by the tennis court.

Stour Estuary - Osprey again in Seafield Bay.

Monday 27th August.

Lowestoft Area - Cattle Egret still off Breydon South wall on Burgh Castle Marsh.

Walberswick - Juvenile Caspian Gull.

Minsmere - Great Egret from est hide + 9 Little Gull & 2 Spot Red on the reserve.

Sizewell - 2 juv Black Tern off the rigs + 25 Little Gull & juv Med Gull.

Alde Estuary - 2 Spoonbill on Hazelwood Marshes + Spot Red. Eclipse drake Garganey on Town Marshes (photo Mark Cornish) + 5 Whinchat.

Bawdsey - Juvenile Garganey on the 1st lagoon.

Lackford SWT - Spotted Crake still viewable from the double decker hide early morning.

Sunday 26th August.

Southwold - Both Sooty and Manx Shearwater seen offfshore during the morning.

Minsmere - Great Egret frpm West hide.

Bawdsey - Garganey on the 1st lagoon at East Lane.

Lackford - The Spotted Crake was seen again on Jason's Pool.

Saturday 25th August.

Lowestoft Area - Cattle Egret still on Birgh Castle Marshes for 6th day.

Minsmere - Osprey South over the reserve at 08:30hrs + Great Egret & Wood Sand on the reserve.

Havergate - 8 Spoonbill on the RSPB reserve.

Shingle Street - Whinchat by the tennis court.

Barham - A Glossy Ibis was seen to fly over Church Lane this morning.

Lackford SWT - Spotted Crake again on Jason's Pool.

Friday 24th August.

Minsmere - No sign of the juvenile Semipalmated Sandpiper today. A Wood Warbler was present in scrub behind East hide early morning + Great Egret & Black Tern noted.

Alde Estuary - 11 Spoonbill on Hazelwood Marshes.

Shingle Street - 2 Whinchat.

Bawdsey - Greater Scaup still present at East Lane + 4 Spotted Redshank

Lackford SWT - Spotted Crake seen again on Jasons Pool from the double-decker hide.


Thursday 23rd August.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Cattle Egret seen today, 1 at Carlton Marshes & 1 along Breydon South wall on Burgh Castle Marshes.

Dunwich - Great Egret South.

Minsmere - The SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER continues to show on the scrape.

Alde Estuary - Osprey over Hazelwood Marshes at 16:50hrs + 14 Spoonbill though mobile. (photo Martin Flack).

Shingle Street - 3 Whinchat in field opposite the tennis court.

Bawdsey - Greater Scaup on the 3rd lagoon at East Lane.

Wednesday 22nd August.

Minsmere - The SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER remains on the scrape, favouring South scrape + Great Egret.

Snape - 3 Wood Sands present on the scrape.

Havergate - 13 Spoonbill on the RSPB reserve + Garganey.

Hollesley - An Ortolan Bunting was trapped, ringed & released at a private site in the village.

Shingle Street - 3 Whinchat present.

Lackford SWT - 2 Spotted Crake rptd on Jasons Pool.

Tuesday 21st August.

Covehithe - Grasshopper Warbler noted in clifftop vegetation.

Southwold - 2 Pied Flys by the sewage works. Pied Fly seen on Gardener Road.

Minsmere - SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER still showing on either East or South scrape.

Sizewell - 3 Black Tern off the rigs + 2 Blk Reds by the power station

Aldeburgh - 3 Spoonbill on Hazelwood Marshes + 13 Whinchat on Town Marshes.

Shingle Street - 3 Whinchat by the tennis court & 2 Spot Fly by the allotments.

Bawdsey - 6 Pied Flys (5 East Lane & 1 on the cliffs), Spot Fly, 6 Whinchat (4 on the cliffs & 2 at the quay) Common Redstart & Hobby noted.

Felixstowe - 4 Pied Flys at LBO + Whinchat. 3 Pied Flys along the tomline wall at the ferry + 3 Whinchat.

Trimley Msh - 2 Wood Sands on the reservoir.

Monday 20th August.

Minsmere - The SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER continues to show on the scrape best viewed from South hide though occasionally gets on East scrape, also juvenile Black Tern, 76 Little Gull & up to 3 Great Egrets around the reserve. (photo John Richardson)

Alde Estuary - 11 Spoonbill on Hazelwood Marshes.

Havergate - 11 Spoonbill on the RSPB island + juvenile Garganey.

Bawdsey - Greater Scaup at East Lane.

Trimley SWT - Eclipse drake Garganey present on the reservoir.

Lackford SWT - Spotted Crake seen again from the double decker hide at 07:55hrs.

Sunday 19th August.

Minsmere - The SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was again present commuting between both East and South scrapes + 109 Little Gulls.

Sizewell - Juvenile Black Tern off the rigs.

Alde Estuary - 11 Spoonbill Hazelwood Marshes.

Bawdsey - Wood Sand dropped in briefly on the lagoons at East Lane + 1 Greater Scaup still present.

Stour Estuary - Osprey seen in Seafield Bay.

Saturday 18th August.

Lowestoft Area - Great Egret briefly at Carlton Marsh SWT.

Covehithe - A juvenile Barred Warbler was found in hedgerow at the east end of lane from Covehithe chruch at 09:05hrs, though was very elusive.

Minsmere - A mystery 'peep' was found on East scrape at 08:30hrs and was later confirmed as a juvenile SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER at 11:40hrs. The bird then flew to South scrape at 11:45hrs where it remained until the evening.

Alde Estuary - No sign of the American Golden Plover but 11 Spoonbill present.

Havergate - Osprey South over the RSPB reserve at 11:00hrs + 8 Spoonbill.

Shingle Street - No sign of the 1st winter Red-backed Shrike today but Whinchat noted near the tennis court.

Bawdsey - The 2 Greater Scaup remain on the lagoons but mobile.

Lackford - The Spotted Crake was seen from the double-decker hide at Lackford SWT from 06:16hrs. 

Friday 17th August.

Lowestoft Area - Cattle Egret roosted again at Leathes Ham. A juvenile Purple Heron was seen to come in off at Hopton at 14:20hrs.

Minsmere - Great Egret seen on the pool behind South hide at 12:10hrs.

Aldeburgh - 3 Red-crested Pochard on Town Marshes + Whinchat.

Shingle Street - A juvenile Red-backed Shrike was discovered early afternoon by the tennis court though mobile.

Bawdsey - 2 Greater Scaup still on the 3rd lagoon at East Lane.

Lackford - The Spotted Crake was again seen on Jason's pool at the SWT reserve early morning. (photo Mark Cornish)

Thursday 16th August.

Lowestoft Area - Cattle Egret til 05:27hrs at Leathes Ham then flew towards Carlton Marshes.

Alde Estuary - The AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was again seen on Hazelwood Marshes in the NE corner late morning + adult Curlew Sand, Spot Red & 8 Spoonbill.

Wednesday 15th August.

Lowestoft Area - Cattle Egret seen over Carlton Marshes late evening then roosted at Leathes Ham.

Benacre - A juvenile Caspian Gull complete with Yellow Darvic ring was seen on the broad.

Aldeburgh - Tree Pipit in the churchyard.

Alde Estuary - No sign today of the adult American Golden Plover at Hazelwood Marshes but 9 Spoonbill, Spot Red & adult Curlew Sand noted.

Tuesday 14th August.

Benacre - Wood Sand on the broad.

Minsmere - 72 Little Gulls on South scrape.

Alde Estuary - The adult AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER continued to show on Hazelwood Marshes and on the adjacent onion fields between 10:45 - 15:45hrs, also Spoonbill noted.

Monday 13th August.

North Warren - Great Egret still on South Marsh.

Alde Estuary - A Summer plaumaged AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was found early afternoon on Hazelwood Marshes and remained until 16:45hrs though mobile throughout + 5 Spoonbill. 3 Whinchat on Town Marshes. (photos Andrew Moon)

Shingle Street - Dotterel South calling just after 09:00hrs + 2 juv Arctic Terns in the river mouth. 3 Whinchat by the tennis court.

Deben Estuary - Wood Sand still on the ferry salting pools.

Lackford SWT - The Spotted Crake was again seen early morning on Jason's Pool.

Sunday 12th August.

Minsmere - 3 Black Tern, 3 Little Gull, 9 Spot Reds + Wood Sand the highlights from on the scrape.

Sizewell - Juvenile Black Tern off the rigs.

Aldeburgh - 3 Red-crested Pochard on Town Marshes. 5 Spoonbill on Hazelwood Marshes + Curlew Sand.

Havergate - 10 Spoonbill + Little Stint Havergate RSPB.

Shingle Street - Single Whinchat by the tennis court.

Deben Estuary - Short-eared Owl at Kingsfleet.

Lackford - The Spotted Crake was again viewable on Jason's pool throughout the morning and showing well at times. (photo Barry Woodhouse).

Minsmere - 3 Black Terns on South Marsh.

Sizewell - 20 Little Gull off the rigs.

North Waren - Great Egret on South Marsh.

Snape - 2 Wood Sands on Botany Marshes.

Lackford SWT - A Spotted Crake was seen at from the double decker hide 07:20hrs. It's 20 years ago to the month that the last Spotted Crake was seen at Lackford. (photo Alan Chapman).

Minsmere - Black Tern on South scrape + 32 Little Gulls.

Sizewell - 2 Little Gulls + Arctic Tern off the rigs today.

Felixstowe - Wood Sand on the ferry salting's + Arctic Tern.

Dunwich - Pied Fly trapped and ringed.

Alde Estuary - 5 Curlew Sands at Hazelwood Marshes + 2 LRP, Spot Red & Little Gull.

Monday 6th August.

Aldeburgh - Single Pied Fly in the grounds of the churchyard.

Alde Estuary - Curlew Sand at Hazelwood Marsh.

Snape - Wood Sand & Garganey at Botany Marshes.

Havergate - 16 Spoonbill, 9 Curlew Sand, Little Stint & Garganey on the RSPB reserve.

Felixstowe - Pied Fly at LBO.

Sunday 5th August.

Minsmere - 5 Spoonbill over Vault Hill.

Hollesley - A Wood Warbler was trapped and ringed at a private site.

Deben Estuary - A Quail was heard calling from vegetation field at Kingsfleet just beyond the road roller from the Deben end.

Stonham - Wood Warbler trapped and ringed at a Brewery Farm.

Saturday 4th August.

Lowestoft Area - Pied Fly's were seen at the following location around Lowestoft area today; (6) Gunton old railtrack. (1) North Denes. (2) Hubbards Loke. (1) Corton railtrack. (2) Sparrows Nest Park by the lighthouse. (1) Warrenhouse Wood (1) North Denes.

Minsmere - Wood Sand on the scrape.

Thorpeness - 3 Pied Flys around the old caravan park.

Aldeburgh - 4 Pied Fly's along the old railtrack + 3 Pied Fly's in the cemetery. 5 Curlew Sands, 4 Little Gulls & Spot Red at Hazelwood Marshes.

Orford - 2 Pied Flys in Orford quay car park.

Friday 3rd August.

There was an unprecedented arrival of Pied Flycatcher's (mainly juveniles) along the coast today with 68 birds being reported. Full list below as follows:


Lowestoft Area - (8) Kessingland Sewage Works/Coopers Lane, Corton there were (8) Corton Radar Lodge, (3) Furze Wood (1) New Sewage Works, (2) Old Railtrack (1) Belle Vue Park & (3) birds in gardens around the town.

Southwold - (8) Sewage Works & (4) Churchyard.

Minsmere - (2) Sluice Bushes & (1) North Wall.

Thorpeness - (5) Old Caravan Park.

Aldeburgh - (4) Churchyard, (1) Caravan Park (2) NW corner of Town Marsh & (7) Southern end of the Old Railtrack. (photo Mark Cornish).

Shingle Street - (1)

Bawdsey - (4) East Lane & (5) Bawdsey Hall.

Wednesday 1st August.

Minsmere - 2 Black Tern, Wood Sand, 5 LRP, 16 Spotted Redshank & 22 Little Gull on the scrape. A Pied Flycatcher was seen along woodland trail.

Sizewell - 2 Black Tern & 30 Little Gulls off the rigs.

Alde Estuary - 6 Curlew Sands & single Spot Red Hazelwood Marshes.

Felixstowe - A female Red-backed Shrike was seen just SW of manor terrace car park at 10:00hrs then flew to towards the Butts pond but was not relocated, also 3 Pied Flycatcher's trapped at LBO.
