JANUARY HIGHLIGHTS

Sunday 20th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 CATTLE EGRET still Carlton Marshes. 6 Purple Sands at Ness Point + Shag in Hamilton Dock.

Dunwich - Great Egret on Dingle Marshes + 3 Snow Bunting on the beach.

Sizewell - The juvenile Iceland Gull was again seen off the rigs then roosting on the dome of the power station. A dark argentatus Herring Gull (resembling a 1st winter American Herring Gull) caused a bit if excitement this morning.

Leiston - 11 Bewicks Swan (2 juvs) still viewable from Red House Lane.

North Warren - c120 White-fronted Geese on North Marsh.

Aldeburgh - The 6 Pink-footed Geese & 4 Tundra Bean Geese remained on Town Marshes until 09:45hrs then flew South + Ring-tail Hen Harrier & Short-eared Owl.

Bawdsey - 4 Shorelark still present at East Lane + Great Egret & Purple Sand noted today.

Deben Estuary - Adult BLACK BRANT seen amongst Dark-bellied Brent Geese between Felixstowe Ferry - Falkenham at Kingsfleet.

Felixstowe - Purple Sand on rocks in front of Fludyers Hotel.

Stour Estuary - Ad drake Smew on the estuary viewed from the river bank by the Co-op Manningtree.

Ipswich - The SIBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF was still present along Bobbits Lane (directions as per yesterday + 4 Common Chiffchaff. 8 Waxwing seen on Hines Road briefly at 10:50hrs.

Saturday 19th.

Lowestoft Area - 3 CATTLE EGRET at Carlton Marshes today.

Reydon - 9 Waxwing along The Drive.

Sizewell - No sign of the juvenile Iceland Gull but 3 1st winter Caspian Gulls noted.

Leiston - 11 Bewicks Swan ( 9 adults & 2 juveniles) in fields along Red House Lane opposite leisure centre.

Aldeburgh - 6 Pink-footed Geese + 4 Tundra Bean Geese on Town Marshes + Short-eared Owl. (photo Mark Cornish)

Sudbourne  - ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD again over Sudbourne Marsh prior to dusk + Short-eared Owl.

Woodbridge - 3 Waxwing early afternoon on Orchard Close though mobile.

Martlesham - 2 Waxwing seen near Tesco roundabout.

Ipswich - A SIBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF was discovered along Belstead Brook just before the 2nd footbridge in Ashground plantation 200m East of Bobbits Lane car park off Stoke Park Drive at TM.150.415. 22 (photos Ian Porter)Waxwing again seen from Hines Close (Off Felixstowe Road) though mobile.

Great Livermere - 7 Caspian Gull in the gull roost this evening.


Friday 18th.

Lowestoft Area - ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD again from the Waveney Forest mound + Hen Harrier & 3 Short-eared Owl.

Reydon - 4 Waxwing along The Drive.

Dunwich - 5 Twite just South of the shore pools.

Sizewell - Juvenile Iceland Gull again off B rig though mobile. (photo Andrew Moon).

Leiston - 11 Bewicks Swan still in fields opposite the leisure centre.

Thorpeness - 3 Goosander on the Meare.

Aldeburgh - 8 Tundra Bean Geese & 2 Pink-footed Geese on Town Marshes + Short-eared Owl at TM.449.555,

Orfordness - ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD over Pagodas at 13:30hrs then again at 16:02hrs when seen to head across the river towards Sudbourne to roost + 2 Bewicks Swan.

Gedgrave - Ringtail Hen Harrier over Gedgrave Marsh.

Slaughden - Purple Sand on the sea defences.

Hollesley - 18 EWFG on the RSPB reserve

Bawdsey - 4 Shorelark still on the beach by the saline lagoon.


Woodbridge - 2 Waxwing again on Orchard Close though mobile.

Ipswich - 22 Waxwing on Hines Road this afternoon.

Brecks - 3cy Iceland Gull seen on rooftops on Burrell Way.

Thursday 17th.

Reydon - Juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD was seen to fly West along Smeare Marshes at 13:20hrs. Waxwing present along The Drive again today.

Minsmere - Ringtail Hen Harrier seen over Whin Hill + 2 Whooper Swan on South Girder.

Sizewell - Juvenile Iceland Gull again off B outfall though mobile.

Leiston - Waxwing present along Sylvester Road in the town.

North Warren - Merlin present on North Marsh.

Aldeburgh - 4 Tundra Bean Geese & a single Pink-footed Goose on Town Marshes. (photo Mark Cornish).

Woodbridge - 2 Waxwing again briefly on Orchard Close.

Wednesday 16th.

Dunwich - 2 Great Egrets on the shore pools.

Sizewell - The juvenile/1st winter Iceland Gull was again noted offshore around the B rig.

North Warren - 2 adult Spoonbill again on South Marsh.

Woodbridge - 17 Waxwing again in Orchard Close early afternoon though mobile.

Stour Estuary - The adult drake Smew continues to show on the estuary viewable from the river bank by the Co-op at Manningtree.

Tuesday 15th.

Lowestoft Area - ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD viewable from the Waveney Forest mound this morning + 2 Short-eared Owl & Merlin.

Benacre - 2 CATTLE EGRET again in fields by Walnut Tree Farm.

Dunwich - 2 Great Egret on the shore pools.

Minsmere - 7 Whooper Swan on South Girder + Great Egret on pool behind est hide.

Bawdsey - 4 Shorelark still at East Lane + Purple Sand on sea defences.

Stour Estuary - Adult drake Smew still viewable from the river wall by the Co-op in Manningtree.

Monday 14th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 CATTLE EGRET, Short-eared Owl & c1000 Pink-footed Geese late afternoon at Carlton Marsh SWT. 7 Waxwing still on Westhall Road. 2 Shag at Lake Lothing. 2 ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARDS + 2 Short-eared Owls seen from the Waveney Forest mound.

Covehithe - Water Pipit & 16 Snow Bunting by the broad.

Minsmere - Ring-tail Hen Harrier seen again on the reserve.

Sizewell - Juvenile Iceland Gull again off the rigs late morning.

Leiston - 10 Bewicks Swan along Red House Lane in field opposite the leisure centre.

Hollesley - 5 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on the RSPB reserve.

Bawdsey - 4 Shorelark East Lane.

Ipswich - 2 Waxwing on Lattice Avenue from 09:45 - 10:24hrs only

Orwell Estuary - Great Northern Diver + Shag on the river viewable from Levington Creek.

Stour Estuary - 3 Slavonian Grebe in Holbrook Bay. Drake Smew viewble from Co-op Manningtree.

Baylham - RAVEN over the village at TM901.506.

Buxhall - Waxwing still in the village near the village hall.

Sunday 13th.

Lowestoft Area - CATTLE EGRET still present at Carlton Marsh SWT. 7 Waxwing again on Westhall Road.

Sizewell - The 1st winter Iceland Gull continues to show off Sizewell B today + 1w Caspian Gull.

North Warren - 108 Eurasian White-fronted Geese noted this morning + 2 Spoonbill on South Marsh.

Bawdsey - 4 Shorelark still present at East Lane though mobile.

Stour Estuary - Adult drake Smew still on the estuary viewed from Cattawade late morning.

Lackford Lakes SWT - 1st Caspian Gulls & 3 adult Yellow-legged Gulls noted early morning.

Saturday 12th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD at Tofts Monk viewed from the Waveney Forest mound. 2 CATTLE EGRET early morning at Carlton Marshes before heading South where they were noted feeding in fields North of The Street at Benacre. 7 Waxwing Westhall Road.

Minsmere - 11 Bewicks Swan, 6 Whooper Swan & 4 Goosander noted on the reserve + Great Egret at Island Mere & ringtail Hen Harrier seen again.

Sizewell - A 1st winter Iceland Gull was found off the rigs at midday + Spoonbill South.

Thorpeness - 9 Goosander (2 drake) on the Meare.

North Warren - 96 Eurasian White-fronted Geese.

Aldeburgh - 2 Tundra Bean, 1 Pink-footed & 26 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on the West side of Town Marshes. (photo Mark Cornish)

Orfordness - ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD & 16 Snow Buntings on the NT reserve.

Sudbourne - Short-eared Owl Sudbourne Marshes.

Bawdsey - 4 Shorelark still on the beach by the saline lagoon.

Woodbridge - 17 Waxwing present along Orchard Close mid morning only.

Trimley Marshes - 2 Bewicks Swan on the reservoir.

Orwell Estuary - Water Pipit still rptd at Levington Creek.

Ipswich - 4 Waxwing over Malborough Road.


Friday 11th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Hawfinch again in Sotterley Park just before 09:00hrs before flying towards the paddock. 3 Waxwing again on Westhall Road

Reydon - 2 Waxwing on The Drive today.

Minsmere - 1st winter Caspian Gull on the scrape + Great Egret on pools behind West hide.

Leiston - 11 Bewicks Swan (9 adults) on arable land opposite the leisure centre on Red House Lane.

Bawdsey - The 4 Shorelark remain North of the pits at East Lane.

Woodbridge - 17 Waxwing present on Orchard Close.

Felixstowe - Purple Sand on the point at LBO.

Orwell Estuary - Water Pipit again by the pipe outlet at Levington Creek + Merlin.

Kesgrave - 1st winter ROSE-COLOURED STARLING still Bugsby Way.

Thursday 10th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Hawfinch again seen in The Dell at Sotterley Park. Adult Caspian Gull in fields opposite VC Cooke recycling centre, Beccles. 19 Snow Bunting on the beach at Kessingland.

Reydon - 2 Waxwing along The Drive.

Minsmere - 7 Whooper Swan still on the reserve.

Leiston - 2 Tundra Bean Geese + 11 Bewicks Swan still along Red House Lane.

Slaughden - Two 1st winter Caspian Gulls feeding offshore (photo Mark Cornish).

Sudbourne - Ringtail Hen Harrier seen over the marshes.

Bawdsey - 4 Shorelark still present at East Lane.

Deben Estuary - ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD seen over Kingsfleet early afternoon, near-by 11 Tundra Bean Geese on arable land on Corporation Marshes & 7 Bewicks Swan flew upriver.

Felixstowe - Purple Sand on the sea defences at Landguard,

Kesgrave - 1st winter ROSE-COLOURED STARLING still Bugsby Way.

Brecks - Lesser-spotted Woodpecker noted again at Santon Downham.

Wednesday 9th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Hawfinch seen at Sotterley Dell early morning. 3 Waxwing seen briefly this afternoon on Westhall Road.

Reydon - 5 Waxwing reported this afternoon (no further details)

Hollesley - 22 Eurasian White-fronted Geese & 1 Pink-footed Goose on the scrape at Hollesley Marsh RSPB + ringtail Hen Harrier & Merlin noted.

Bawdsey - 4 Shorelark still by the saline lagoon North of the car park at East Lane near the martello tower.

Orwell Estuary - A splendid male Hen Harrier was seen to fly North over Levington Marina at 13:15hrs (photo Will Brame) + Water Pipit by the outfall pipie by the creek and Shag sat on mooring opposite the marina.

Stour Estuary - Great Northern Diver Stutton + Slavonian Grebe in Holbrook Bay.

Monday 7th.

Lowestoft Area - Male Hen Harrier seen over Carlton Marsh RSPB.

Dunwich - Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still on the shore pools + 16 Twite & 2 Great Egrets.

Minsmere - ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD seen over South levels + ringtail Hen Harrier still on the reserve.

Orfordness - ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD seen to fly off the NT reserve towards Sudbourne at 16:06hrs

Hollesley - 23 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on the scrape at Hollesley RSPB.

Bawdsey - 4 Shorelark still East Lane.

Felixstowe - 2 Velvet Scoter South off LBO at 09:23hrs.

Alton Water - 2 Mealy Redpoll seen with 6 Lesser Redpoll near Tattingstone Place.

Stour Estuary - Great Northern Diver on the river viewable from Stutton Mill at 12:30hrs + Greenshank East of the white bridge at Cattawade.

Charsfield - Single Waxwing still present by the village petrol station.

Sunday 6th.

Lowestoft Area - A Yellow-browed Warbler was a surprise find in a mist net at Burgh Castle. 2 CATTLE EGRET still in fields North of The Street Benacre.

Dunwich - The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL remains on the shore pools + 15 Twite in the area.

Minsmere - The ringtail Hen Harrier again put in the performance from Island Mere from 15:30hrs + the family party of Whooper Swan remained behind South hide.

Leiston - 2 Tundra Bean Geese & 9 Bewicks Swan in fields opposite the leisure centre at the Southern end of Red House Lane.

Hollesley - 21 Eurasian White-fronted Geese + a lone Pink-footed Goose on the reserve at Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Bawdsey - 4 Shorelark still by the saline lagoon North of East Lane car park.

Orwell Estuary - Jack Snipe Levington lagoon.

Kesgrave - The 1st winter ROSE-COLOURED STARLING continues so along Bugsby Way though elusive at times.

Felixstowe - 4 Tundra Bean Geese still in arable fields off Gulpher Road.

Alton Water - Slavonian Grebe seen on the reservoir,

Stour Estuary - 2 Slavonian Grebe on the river viewed from Stutton Ness.

Saturday 5th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 CATTLE EGRET in fields at Beancre North of The Street. CATTLE EGRET still Carlton Marshes. 2 Waxwing at Carlton Colville at the junction of Beccles Road / Hollow Grove Way this morning. 30+ Snow Bunting on the beach at Kessingland. 2 Hawfinch seen within Sotterley Park.

Dunwich - The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL remained on the shore pools but was generally elusive, also 3 Great Egrets, 18 Twite + 2 Spotted Redshanks noted. Offshore c130 Common Scoter on the sea.

Minsmere - Highlights from around the reserve today included; Ring-tail Hen Harrier, 6 Whooper Swan, 1w Caspian Gull, Great Egret & Firecrest.

Leiston - 2 Tundra Bean Geese still on arable land at the Southern end of Red House Lane + 11 Bewicks Swan (9 adults) present.

Bawdsey - The 4 Shorelark remain North of East Lane car park on beach by the saline lagoon + White-winged Gull rptd on beach then flew North.

Felixstowe - 4 Tundra Bean Geese still on arable land viewed from Gulher Road, Old Felixstowe.

Orwell Estuary - 4 Jack Snipe seen at Levington Creek + Great Northern Diver seen to fly upriver into Thorpe Bay.

Kesgrave - The moulting ROSE-COLOURED STARLING continues to show along Bugsby Way, Grange Farm Estate (Please respect residents privacy).

Charsfield - A Waxwing was seen feeding on Rown berries by the village garage.

Stonham - 3 probable Northern Long-tailed Tit inter-grades trapped & ringed at Brewery Farm.

Friday 4th.

Lowestoft Area - CATTLE EGRET still being seen at Carlton Marsh SWT. 5 Velvet Scoter still off the Southern end of Gorleston Cliffs at 11:55hrs.

Benacre - 2 CATTLE EGRET in fields North of The Street & 1 bird seen in flight in field beyond cattle  c800m east of A12 at 12:35hrs.

Dunwich - A drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL was discovered just after midday on the shore pools and remained for a little over 1 hour before being lost on the marshes + 3 Great Egrets & 2 Water Pipit noted.

Minsmere - 7 Whooper Swan over the main reedbed & ringtail Hen Harrier seen to roost at Island Mere.

Leiston - 2 Tundra Bean Geese again in arable field on Red House Lane opposite the leisyre centre + 9 Bewicks Swan. 15 Waxwing present in the swimming pool car park.

Woodbridge - Waxwing briefly on Orchard Close.

Thursday 3rd.

Lowestoft Area - 2 CATTLE EGRET on Carlton Marsh SWT reserve this morning before flying South.

Minsmere - 14 Waxwing noted by the entrance to the car park this afternoon. On South scrape, two 1st winter Caspian Gulls were noted + 2 Tundra Bean Geese were present on East scrape from mid morning (Leiston birds below?)

Leiston - 2 Tundra Bean Geese + 11 Bewicks Swan along Red House Lane early morning.

Felixstowe - 4 Tundra Bean Geese on arable land viewable from Gulpher Rd Old Felixstowe.

Orwell Estuary - Great Northern Diver off Levington Creek.

Kesgrave - The juvenile ROSE-COLOURED STARLING continues to show along Bugsby Way, Grange Farm Estate.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Snow Bunting on the beach at Kessingland. Ring-necked Parakeet still in Nicholas Everitt Park Oulton Broad.

Walberswick - 9 Twite along the shingle beach between Dunwich - Walberswick.

Minsmere - Firecrest seen by the toilet block + 10 Goosander & 1st winter Casoian Gull on the scrape at dusk. Ringtail Hen Harrier over Island Mere at 15:18hrs.

Leiston - 2 Tundra Bean Geese in fields opposite the leisure centre early morning only + 9 Bewicks Swan.

Sudbourne - Ringtail Hen Harrier + Common Buzzard resembling a Rough-legged Buzzard seen over Sudbourne Marshes.

Butley - Whooper Swan still by Ferry Farm.

Hollesley - 13 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on the RSPB reserve.
