EASTERN STONECHAT sp update 22nd Jan: The first winter Eastern Stonechat that was present at Hollesley Marsh RSPB from 1st December 2019 til 5th January 2020 has been confirmed through DNA as SIBERIAN STONECHAT (S.maurus).

Friday 31st.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Short-eared Owl from the Waveney Forest mound this atfernoon.

Benacre - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the Broad.

Easton Bavents - 2 Twite seen just North of the cliff-top cottages that are currently being demolished.

Blythburgh - The 11 adult Bewicks Swan continue to show in fields by Hinton cross-roads. 3 Tundra Bean Geese & 2 Spotted Redshank on Angel Marsh.

Westleton - 2 Bewicks Swan West early morning.

Minsmere - Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still on the scrape + redhead Smew.

Thorpeness - 5 Goosander (2 drakes) on the meare.

Hollesley - Spoonbill still on the scrape at Hollesley Marshes + Great Egret on the winter flood.

Bawdsey - Juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD still at Bawdsey Marshes. 6 Snow Bunting on the beach at East Lane on the eastward side of the 2nd saline lagoon.

Stour Estuary - 5 Greater Scaup still off Mistley quay.

Brecks - Lesser-spotted Woodpecker seen 1/2ml West of the bridge.

Thursday 30th.

Lowestoft Area - Shorelark again Kessingland beach by the saline lagoon though mobile + 5 Snow Bunting.

Minsmere - Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still on the reserve as was the redhead Smew.

Hollesley - 2nd winter Caspian Gull Hollesley Marsh RSPB + 67 Eurasian White-fronted Geese (photo Andrew Moon).

Felixstowe - 2 Snow Bunting and Purple Sand still LBO (photo Alan Chaplin)

Stour Estuary - 5 Greater Scaup off Mistley quay.

Flatford - 2 Raven over the village at 12:47hrs.

Brecks - Lesser-spotted Woodpecker 1ml West of the bridge at Santon Downham.

Lakenheath - 5 Common Crane at dusk at the RSPB reserve + Hen Harrier noted.

Wednesday 29th.

Lowestoft Area - The Shorelark was again present and showing well on the seaward side of the saline lagoon on Kessingland beach today. 2 Great Egrets at dusk at Carlton Marshes.

Benacre - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the Broad.

Blythburgh - 11 adult Bewicks Swan still North of Hinton cross-roads.

Dunwich - 2 Long-tailed Ducks at Dingle Marshes + 25 Snow Bunting, 2 Water Pipit & Spotted Redshank but no sign of any Twite.

Minsmere - The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL pit in another appearance on the scrape today though generally elusive.

Hollesley - 18 Tundra Bean Geese in fields viewable from the approach to the cafe + 55 Eurasian White-fronted Geese.

Bawdsey - Juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD still Bawdsey Marshes.

Felixstowe - 2 confiding Snow Bunting still on the beach at LBO + Purple Sand on the point.

Stour Estuary - 3 Slavonian Grebes on the river viewable from Stutton Ness.

Tuesday 28th.

Blythburgh - 11 adult Bewicks Swan still in fields just South of Hinton cross-roads.

Minsmere - Redhead Smew on East scrape this morning.

Hollesley - 17 Tundra Bean Geese seen in fields in the village.

Bawdsey - 6 Snow Bunting still on the beach at East Lane.

Deben Estuary - Ruff seen on the river amongst Black-tailed Godwits between Woodbridge - Kyson Point.

Felixstowe - 2 Snow Bunting still on the beach at LBO + Purple Sandpiper on the point.

Orwell Estuary - 2 Greater Scaup (1st win drake + fem) again on Loompit Lake.

Monday 27th.

Lowestoft Area - The mobile Shorelark was again seen by the saline lagoon on the beach opposite 'The Hollies'.

Walberswick - 20 Snow Bunting on the beach by Corporation Marshes but no sign of any Twite. Great Egret also noted.

Minsmere - Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL continues to show on South levels + 11 Bewicks Swan were seen to fly North at 07:12hrs.

Havergate - 2 Spoonbill on the RSPB reserve + 2 Tundra Bean Geese.

Gedgrave - Female Merlin seen hunting along track beyond Gedgrave Hall + 16 Tundra Bean Geese on Gedgrave Marshes.

Boyton - Spoonbill Boyton Marshes + 32 Eurasian White-fronted Geese & 2 Pink-footed Geese.

Hollesley - Spoonbill on the scrape at Hollesley Marsh RSPB + Great Egret on the winter flood this afternoon.

Orwell Estuary - The 1st winter Great Northern Diver continues to show from Stoke sailing club Freston.

Sunday 26th.

Lowestoft Area - The Shorelark was again seen by the saline lagoon though elusive + single Snow Bunting. 2 Great Egrets Carlton Marshes at dusk.

Dunwich - 14 Twite still on the shingle beach approx 1 mile North o the beach car park (photo Andrew Moon).

Minsmere - Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still on South levels + redhead Smew still viewable from the mound.

Leiston - Merlin seen by the Cakes and Ale campsite.

Bawdsey - 6 Snow Bunting still East Lane.

Woodbridge - Firecrest in the North section of Elmhurst Park.

Deben Estuary - Water Pipit again on the reservoir at Redhouse Farm / Gosford Hall Falkenham.

Felixstowe - 2 Snow Bunting still on the beach + Purple Sandpiper on the point.

Orwell Estuary - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the river of Stoke sailing club Freston. Drake Greater Scaup again on Loompit Lake.

Saturday 25th.

Lowestoft Area - The Shorelark was again seen by the saline lagoon on the beach at Kessingland. 10 Purple Sands at Ness Point. 5 Water Pipit Carlton Marshes + 2 Eurasian White-fronted Geese over.

Benacre - The juvenile Great Northern Diver remains on the Broad albeit rather distant, near-by 5 Snow Bunting just North of the sluice.

Blythburgh - 11 adult Bewicks Swan still in fields by the Hinton cross-roads + female Merlin seen.

Minsmere - Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still on South levels + 7 Whooper Swan still on the scrape. Redhead Smew still from the mound.

Alde Estuary - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the river 100m from Slaughden yacht club.

Hollesley - Spoonbill on the scrape at Hollesley Marshes.

Shingle Street - 3 adult Whooper Swan still by the pumping house at Oxley Dairy.

Bawdsey - Juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD again over the marshes, near-by 2 Purple Sands on the sea defences at East Lane + 6 Snow Bunting.

Felixstowe - 2 Snow Bunting continue to show well on the beach just North of the point.

Stour Estuary - 4 Slavonian Grebes in Holbrook Bay.

Ampton - Raven over Ampton Barracks towards Great Livermere + Red Kite.

Friday 24th.

Lowestoft Area - Great Egret Carlton Marshes.

Westleton - 11 adult Bewicks Swan still by Hinton cross-roads.

Dunwich - 17 Twite seen approx 1 mile North of the beach car park this morning, also noted 25 Snow Bunting, 2 Spotted Redshank & Great Egret.

Minsmere - The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL was re-discovered on South levels where it remained throughout the day and showing reasonably well on occasions. The redhead Smew still viewable from the mound & Merlin by Bittern hide.

Gedgrave - 16+ Tundra Bean Geese on Gedgrave Marshes this morning.

Shingle Street - 3 adult Whooper Swan by the pump house at Oxley Dairy.

Bawdsey - Juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD again on Bawdsey Marshes viewable from Ferry Road.

Felixstowe - 2 Snow Bunting still on the beach at LBO + 2 Purple Sands on the point.

Stour Estuary - 5 Slavonian Grebes in Holbrook Bay + Great Northern Diver of Stutton Ness and 5 Greater Scaup of Mistley quay.

Thursday 23rd.

Dunwich - 2 Great Egret Dingle Marshes + 24 Snow Bunting on Corporation Marsh (photo Peter Lakey)

Westleton - The 11 adult Bewicks Swan remain in the field 2 miles North of the village by Hinton cross-roads.

Minsmere - The redhead Smew was again on the pool seen from the mound near North hide.

North Warren - 174 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on North Marsh.

Alde Estuary - 148 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on Town Marshes.

Orford - A 1st winter Great Northern Diver was seen on the River Ore 1/2 mile South of the quay this morning.

Havergate - 2 Spoonbill on the RSPB reserve + 2 Spotted Redshank.

Hollesley - 18 Tundra Bean Geese North over the RSPB reserve + 66 Eurasian White-fronted Geese and Water Pipit noted.

Felixstowe - The 2 confiding Snow Bunting remain on the beach at LBO + 2 Purple Sands on the point.

Trimley Marshes - The 2 Tundra Bean Geese remain viewable from the platform though distant.

Orwell Estuary - 2 Greater Scaup (1st winter drake & female) were present on Loompit Lake (East of Levington Marina) near-by, he 1st winter drake Long-tailed Duck continues to show off Levington Creek.

Stour Estuary - A Black-necked Grebe was seen on the river from Stutton Ness + 5 Slavonian Grebes and 2 Common Scoter were off Holbrook Bay.

Lakenheath Fen - c20 Bewicks Swan on Washland Fen at dusk (the first recorded at this site this winter).


Wednesday 22nd.

Lowestoft Area - Great Egret Carlton Marshes + 2 Water Pipits.

Benacre - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the Broad.

Westleton - 11 Bewicks Swan still 2 miles North of the village in fields by the Hinton cross-roads + male Hen Harrier thru late afternoon.

Dunwich - 14 Twite still on Dingle Marshes + 25 Snow Bunting, 2 Great Egrets and a Jack Snipe.

Minsmere - Redhead Smew on South scrape early afternoon. Male Merlin still by Bittern hide.

Shingle Street - 2 Short-eared Owls by the pumping station this afternoon.

Felixstowe - 2 Snow Bunting still on the beach mainly within the roped off area + Purple Sand on the point.

Orwell Estuary - 1st winter drake Long-tailed Duck again of Levington Creek.

Stour Estuary - 6 Slavonian Grebes in Holbrook Bay.

Tuesday 21st.

Benacre - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the Broad.

Covehithe - The Tundra Bean Goose remains on the Broad.

Southwold - 3 Tundra Bean Geese on Town Marsh.

Minsmere - Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL still on the scrape + redhead Smew still present.

Boyton - 19 Eurasian White-fronted Geese Boyton Marshes + Short-eared Owl.

Havergate - 2 Spoonbill were seen to fly in at the RSPB reserve.

Hollesley Marsh - 18 Tundra Bean Geese still present in the field just North of the sluice + Water Pipit.

Shingle Street - Short-eared Owl seen along the sea wall.

Felixstowe - 2 Snow Bunting still LBO.

Orwell Estuary - The 1st winter drake Long-tailed Duck continues to show off Levington Creek (photo Peter Lakey) + 10 Bearded Tits seen along the footpath by the laggon.

Ipswich - A Shag was present on the River Gipping near the Sir Bobby Robson bridge along Westend Road.

Monday 20th.

Lowestoft Area - 1 juvenile Great Northern Diver still on Weybread GP.

Benacre - Great Northern Diver still on the Broad.

Covehithe - 2 Water Pipits South over the Broad at 09:00hrs + Tundra Bean Goose.

Dunwich - 14 Twite on the shingle ridge North of beach car park. 25 Snow Bunting, 3 Great Egrets and 2 Spotted Redshank Corporation Marshes.

Minsmere - Female Smew seen from the mound + 7 Whooper Swan on the reserve. The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL was again seen on the scrape late afternoon though generally elusive.

Alde Estuary - Spotted Redshank still by the sharp dog-leg just East of the malting's

Boyton - 67 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on Boyton Marshes.

Hollesley - 18 Tundra Bean Geese in fields just North of the sluice + c100 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on the scrape.

Deben Estuary - Water Pipit on the reservoir at Falkenham by Gosford Hall/Redhouse Farm. A juvenile Pale-bellied Brent Goose was noted amongst c660 Dark-bellied Brent Geese at Falkenham Marshes.

Felixstowe - 2 Snow Bunting still on the beach at LBO + 2 Purple Sands on the point.

Orwell Estuary - Great Northern Diver still off Stoke sailing club.

Chelmodiston - 5 Corn Bunting along Lings Lane.

Stour Estuary - 6 Slavonian Grebes off Stutton Church/Holbrook Bay + 2 Common Scoter. Great Northern Diver opposite Wrabness + 5 Greater Scaup off Stutton Mill.

Sunday 19th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Great Northern Divers still on Weybread GP's. No sign of the Shorelark on Kessingland beach but 8 Sanderling present and showing well. c600 Pink-footed Geese Somerleyton Marshes. 2 Great Egrets roosted at Carlton Marshes

Covehithe - Both the Water Pipit and Tundra Bean Goose remain at the Broad (photo Barry Woodhouse).

Snape - Spotted Redshank on the river by the maltings early afternoon.

Hollesley - 17 Tundra Bean Geese at Hollesley Marshes early morning then flew North.

Shingle Street - 3 adult Whooper Swan still behind the pump house at Oxley Dairy + 2 Short-eared Owls. 6 Snow Bunting on the beach between Battery Cottage and East Lane, Bawdsey.

Bawdsey - Juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD still at Bawdsey Marshes.

Trimley Marshes - 2 Tundra Bean Geese remain on the SWT reserve + 6 Eurasian White-fronted Geese present.

Orwell Estuary - 1st winter drake Long-tailed Duck off Levington Marina.

Friday 17th.

Benacre - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the Broad.

Covehithe - Water Pipit + Tundra Bean Goose on the Broad, near-by Water Pipit Easton Broad and 4 Tree Sparrows at the Bavents.

Westleton - 11 adult Bewicks Swan still in fields off the B1125.

Dunwich - 13 Twite on shingle beach North of the beach car park. 26 Snow Bunting by Corporation Marsh.

Minsmere - Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL continues to show on the scrape (viewed from North hide) + 7 Whooper Swan on the reserve & Merlin over Island Mere.

Hollesley - 54+ Eurasian White-fronted Geese on the escape.

Felixstowe - The 2 confiding Snow Bunting remain on the beach at LBO + Purple Sandpiper on the point.

Orwell Estuary - Long-tailed Duck off Levington Creek.

Thursday 16th.

Benacre - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the Broad.

Covehithe - Water Pipit again seen by the Broad.

Walberswick - 25 Snow Bunting Corporation Marsh.

Sudbourne - Raven seen along the by-road between the two cottages at Crag Farm.

Shingle Street - Short-eared Owl.

Felixstowe - 2 Snow Bunting still LBO + Purple Sand on the point.

Trimley Marshes - Water Pipit seen briefly behind the reservoir hide + 2 Caspian Gull. The 2 Tundra Bean Geese remain.

Tattingstone - Hen Harrier seen to go across the minor road between Tattingstone - Holbrook (NE of Alton Water).

Chelmodiston - 7 Corn Buntings along Lings Lane early morning.

Wednesday 15th.

Benacre - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the Broad.

Westleton - 11 adult Bewicks Swan still just North of Hinton cross-roads viewable from B1125 though no sign of any Tundra Bean Geese.

Minsmere - The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL remains on the scrape though continues to be rather mobile and elusive at times + 7 Whooper Swan present.

North Warren - Great Egret on South Marsh.

Felixstowe - 2 Snow Bunting still at LBO + 2 Purple Sands on the point.

Orwell Estuary - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still of Stoke sailing club, Freston

Stour Estuary - A 1st winter BLACK GUILLEMOT was seen to fly West past Mistley Quay shortly after midday and was then picked up off Mistley Walls at 12:17hrs albeit rather distant. The bird then continued to make it's way upriver where it showed well from the Co-op car park at Manningtree until 13:19hrs when it flew East and was lost to view.

Cavenham - Merlin and Red Kite seen in the area.

Tuesday 14th.

Lowestoft Area - 10+ Water Pipit on Herringfleet Marshes, Somerleyton. 2 Great Northern Divers remain on Weybread GP's.

Wenhaston - A Hawfinch was seen in a garden off Coles Hill today.

Benacre - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the Broad.

Covehithe - Tundra Bean Goose still on the Broad + Water Pipit near-by on Easton Broad.

Westleton - 3 Tundra Bean Geese & 11 Bewicks Swan still in fields 2mls North o the village viewable from the B1125.

Minsmere - No sign of the probable LITTLE BITTERN along North wall. The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL continues to show on the scrape though mobile + 5 Whooper Swan on the reserve. Pom Skua offshore.

Aldeburgh - An adult Iceland Gull was seen on the beach in front of The Brudenell hotel at 11:30hrs + Pom Skua offshore.

Orwell Estuary - Great Northern Diver on the river off Freston.

Monday 13th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Purple Sands at Ness Point.

Benacre - Pale-bellied Brent Goose in winter wheat field South of the broad. Great North Diver still on the broad + Water Pipit at near-by Easton Broad

Westleton - 5 Tundra Bean Geese North West over the village early morning. The 11 Bewicks Swan and 3 Tundra Bean Geese remain in fields 2 miles North of the village viewable from the B1125.

Minsmere - A probable LITTLE BITTERN was seen briefly in flight over North wall late morning. Drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL again on West scrape early afternoon.

Bawdsey - Juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD still Bawdsey Marshes viewable from Ferry Road opposite the picnic entrance.

Trimley Marshes - 2 Tundra Bean Geese remain on the SWT reserve.

Stour Estuary - 6 Slavonian Grebes in Holbrook Bay.

Chelmodiston - 7 Corn Buntings along Lings Lane.

Sunday 12th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Great Northern Divers still at Weybread GP's. 9 Purple Sands at Ness Point.

Benacre - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the broad.

Covehithe - The single Tundra Bean Goose remains on the broad as does the Eurasian White-fronted Goose.

Easton Bavents - 2 Tree Sparrows still present this morning.

Walberswick - 25 Snow Bunting on the beach at Corporation Marsh

Westleton - 3 Tundra Bean Geese with the 11 adult Bewicks Swans West of the B1125 North of the Hinton cross-roads.

Havergate - 19 Tundra Bean Geese on the RSPB reserve + 2 Spoonbill.

Lowestoft Area - Shorelark still on Kessingland North beach by the saline lagoon. The 2 Great Northern Diver remain on the fishing lakes at Weybread GP's. Great Egret at Carlton Marshes at dusk.

Orwell Estuary - 3 Great Northern Divers on the stretch of river between Freston and Woolverstone + 1st winter drake Long-tailed Duck still being seen.

Ixworth - 10 Eurasian White-fronted Geese still on Micklemere.

Friday 10th.

Lowestoft Area - The Shorelark continues to show on the beach by the saline pool. The 2 Great Northern Diver continue to show well on the fishing lake 1 at Weybread GP's, local fisherman have indicated that these 2 birds have been present for several weeks.

Benacre - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still showing on the broad.

Covehithe - Tundra Bean Goose on the broad + Eurasian White-fronted Goose.

Blythburgh - c75 Eurasian White-fronted Geese SE over the estuary late afternoon + Yellow-legged Gull.

Westleton - 11 adult Bewicks Swans remain 2 miles North o the village in fields viewable from B1125.

Minsmere - The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL was again present and showing reasonably well on East scrape.

Sizewell - Black Redstart by the power station.

Thorpeness - 6 Goosander (1 drake) on the meare.

Covehithe - Adult Caspian Gull in clifftop fields at 15:00hrs then flew to near-by pig fields.

Blythburgh - 2 Caspian Gull (both 2nd winter) on the Blyth Estuary.

Westleton - 9 adult Bewicks Swan 2 miles North of the village in fields viewable from B1125.

Minsmere - The drake GREEN-WINGED TEAL continues to show on East scrape + 16 Goosander at dusk.

Lowestoft Area - Shorelark still on the beach at Kessingland by the saltwater pool opposite the steps leading down from 'The Hollies', near-by a Red Kite was seen over Heritage Green. Single Tundra Bean Goose at Oulton Marshes + 16 Eurasian White-fronted Geese amongst c600 Pink-footed Geese.

Benacre - Immature Great Northern Diver still on the broad.

Covehithe - A probable ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD was seen distantly over woods just South of Covehithe Broad + Water Pipit seen on Easton Broad.

Walberswick - 4 Great Egrets on Dingle Marshes + 20 Snow Bunting & 8 Twite on the shingle beach.

Westleton - 9 Bewicks Swan in field North of Darsham Road off the B1125.

Shingle Street - 3 adult Whooper Swan on fields behind the pump house at Oxley Dairy + single Tundra Bean Goose. 2 Short-eared Owls seen at 15:00hrs. 6 Snow Bunting seen at dusk on the shingle beach.

Bawdsey - The juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD continues to show from Ferry Road on marshes opposite the picnic site. Firecrest seen in the picnic site + single Pale-bellied Brent Goose seen amongst Dark-bellied Brent Geese on the saltings. No sign of the female Greater Scaup on the lagoons at East Lane but Purple Sand on the sea defences. Offshore, a Great Northern Diver was seen South then presumably the same bird flew North shortly after + 7 Eurasian White-fronted Geese noted in off. 6+ Snow Bunting seen along the cliff face South of the car park and martello tower.

Orwell Estuary - The 1st winter drake Long-tailed Duck continues to show off Stoke sailing club, Freston + 2 Great Northern Diver & Shag. Long-tailed Duck seen off Levington Creek (presumably the Freston individual), Common Scoter off Nacton shores + 2 Jack Snipe seen at Trimley managed retreat.

Trimley Marshes - The 2 Tundra Bean Geese remain viewable from the viewing platform + 32 Eurasian White-fronted Geese.

Ipswich - 4 Ring-necked Parakeets again in the old cemetery off Belvedere Road.

Stour Estuary - Slavonian Grebe off Stutton Ness. 3 Slavonian Grebe + 3 Common Scoter in Holbrook Bay + male Hen Harrier over Holbrook Creek car park (Lower Holbrook) at dusk.

Lowestoft Area - A Shorelark was present at the Northern end of the beach by the saltwater pool. 20 Eurasian White-fronted Geese South over Carlton Marsh visitor centre + Goosander over. 16 Water Pipits on Herringfleet Marshes, Somerleyton 200 yards South of the mill. 18 Eurasian White-fronted Geese South off Kessingland. 38 Eurasian White-fronted Geese Oulton/Blundeston Marshes + c450 Pink-footed Geese noted. Great Egret roosted at Carlton Marshes at 16:08hrs.

Benacre - The immature Great Northern Diver remains on the broad though distant.

Walberswick - 24 Snow Bunting on the beach by Corporation Marsh + 2 Great Egrets & 2 Spotted Redshank.

Westleton - 11 adult Bewicks Swan in fields off the B1125 Westleton Road then flew South mid morning.
