JUNE HIGHLIGHTS

Tuesday 30th.

Minsmere - The male IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF continues to sing and show occasionally along the approach road from Eastbridge near Saunders Hill. On the reserve, 2 Wood Sands on the konik field + Osprey west over Island Mere.

Alde Estuary - Spoonbill again present at Hazelwood Marshes. Please could birders refrain from climbing on the hand rails by the hide to prevent flushing of any roosting waders.

Deben Estuary - 6 Spoonbill on Ramsholt water meadow + Osprey over.

Monday 29th

Southwold - A record high day count of c17500 Common Swift South over the harbour mouth by 08:35hrs (photo Brian Small).

Deben Estuary - A Spoonbill was present on Lodge Farm water meadow Ramsholt this morning + Spotted Redshank.

Sunday 29th.

Minsmere - Male IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF still singing near Saunders Hill + 1st summer male RED-FOOTED FALCON.

Saturday 27th. 

Waveney Area - A day total count of c4050 Common Swift south over Hopton.

Minsmere - IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF remains along the Eastbridge approach road to the reserve near Saunders Hill.

Alde Estuary - A Spoonbill was present on the estuary at Hazelwood Marsh.

Friday 26th.

Minsmere - IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF still present near Saunders Hill.

Thursday 25th.

Waveney Area - An adult female RED-FOOTED FALCON was seen east over St. Olaves towards Ashby area around 10:00hrs.

Minsmere - The IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF remains along the approach road from Minsmere near Saunders Hill + Black Redstart in the dunes by the public viewing platform.

Hollesley - Spoonbill still on the scrape at Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Trimley Marshes - Summer plumage Spotted Redshank on the reserve today.

Wednesday 24th.

Minsmere - IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF still along the approach road to the reserve near Saunders Hill + adult Roseate Tern on south scrape & 2 Spotted Redshank noted.

Woodbridge - Singing male Black Redstart on rooftops along Bredfield Road early morning.

Tuesday 23rd.

Waveney Area - Osprey over Castle Marsh North Cove heading towards Aldby at 10:40hrs. 

Minsmere - Singing male IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF still near Saunders Hill. A GOLDEN ORIOLE was singing in the north bushes just after 07:00hrs.

Kersey Tye - Possible Lesser-spotted Woodpecker seen at Williams Green.

Monday 22nd.

Minsmere - The long-staying IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF continues to sing and show near Saunders Hill. Adult Roseate Tern still on south scrape though mobile.

Alde Estuary - Great Egret on the northern edge of Hazelwood Marshes.

Boyton - 2 Spoonbill Boyton Marsh RSPB.

Hollesley - 2 Wood Sands still Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Sunday 21st.

Minsmere - Highlights from around the reserve included an adult Roseate Tern on south scrape before flying out to sea, also Garganey & Spotted Redshank noted on East scrape. Please note; although the reserve may be open, hides remain closed.

Saturday 20th.

Waveney Area - Cattle Egret seen flying along the River Waveney at Homersfield at 10:20hrs.

Minsmere - IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF still near Saunders Hill + Roseate Tern on south scrape late morning.

Hollesley - 2 Wood Sands + Spotted Redshank Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Friday 19th.

Minsmere - The singing male IBERIAN CHIFCHAFF remains along the approach road to the reserve from Eastbridge near Saunders Hill. Single adult Roseate Tern on south scrape between 07:40 - 07:50hrs then flew out to sea + 1st summer Little Gull. A possible RED-FOOTED FALCON was seen over south levels at 08:10hrs then flew north.

North Warrren - No sign this morning of the 1st summer RED-FOOTED FALCON over the main reed-bed.

Alde Estuary - 2 Spotted Redshank on Town Marshes.

Stoke-by-Nayland - 2 ROSE-COLOURED STARLING reported in the churchyard at 16:55hrs.

Elmsett - A WHITE-TAILED EAGLE was seen over the village early afternoon.

Thursday 18th.

North Warren - The 1st summer RED-FOOTED FALCON was again present and showing well today over the main reed-bed (photo Brian Small).

Wednesday 17th.

Minsmere - The IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF continues to sing on & off near Saunders Hill. Roseate Tern on south scrape early morning + Little Gull

North Warren - 1st summer RED-FOOTED FALCON still over the main reed-bed today (photo Andrew Moon).

Hollesley - Spoonbill on the scrape.

Shingle Street - An Osprey was seen south close offshore early afternoon.

Tuesday 16th.

Southwold - Spoonbill on the flash late morning then flew towards Walberswick.

Minsmere - IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF still singing near Saunders Hill. 2 adult Roseate Terns on south scrape this evening.

North Warren - A 1st summer female RED-FOOTED FALCON was seen over the main reed-bed shortly after 16:00hrs. An eclipse drake Garganey was seen on south marsh early morning.

Alde Estuary - A singing male MARSH WARBLER was present at an undisclosed site + RED-FOOTED FALCON south over Slaughden yacht club at 17:00hrs.

Hollesley - 2 Spoonbill seen on the flood viewed from Prettyman's Point.

Knodishall - A male Hen Harrier was seen west over fields.

Monday 15th.

Dunwich - 2 adult Roseate Tern were seen south past the coastguards cottages at c14:05hrs presumably heading to south scrape Minsmere (photo Andrew Moon, taken on 13.06.20)

Minsmere - The long-staying IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF continues to sing from Saunders Hill + probable BLACK KITE south.

Hollesley - 2 Spoonbill Hollesley Marsh RSPB + Wood Sand.

Sunday 14th.

Minsmere - Male IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF still present and singing by Saunders Hill + MARSH WARBLER reported. A HONEY BUZZARD was seen south over south levels at 10:34hrs + Spoonbill on the levels this evening.

Aldeburgh - Cattle Egret west over the golf course at 08:30hrs seemingly heading towards the Alde Estuary / Haelwood Marshes.

Hollesley - A 1st summer male GOLDEN ORIOLE was heard singing from poplars along the access track to Hollesley RSPB just prior to 08:00hrs. The bird then flew north and appeared to land in poplars by 'Osiers' where it was briefly heard singing again up until 09:30hrs. 4 Spoonbill on the reserve + 2 Wood Sand remain. Raven over the heath mid afternoon.

Bawdsey - A possible CASPIAN TERN was seen distantly offshore from East Lane at 08:12hrs.

Deben Estuary - A dark phase HONEY BUZZARD was seen drifting high over Kirton towards Falkenham Marsh es just after midday.

Needham Market - 3 Raven over Pipps Fords GP's at 12:03hrs.

Great Blakeneham - Raven south over the village early evening.

Saturday 13th.

Minsmere - The long-staying singing IBERIAN CHIFCHAFF continues to sing along the approach road to the reserve from Eastbridge near Saunders Hill. 2 Roseate Tern were again on south scrape + 4 Little Gull (all 1st summer). Adult Spoonbill south over the levels at 08:33hrs.

Thorpeness - Adult Spoonbill south over the old caravan park at 08:38hrs

North Warren - No sign of the SAVI'S WARBLER from Fen reedbed this morning.

Alde Estuary - A EUROPEAN BEE-EATER was heard over Town Marshes at 10:52hrs + Grasshopper Warbler reeling early afternoon.

Hollesley - A BLACK-WINGED STILT was seen north over the RSPB reserve at 08:55hrs, also 3 Spoonbill & Wood Sand noted.

Chelmodiston - A WHITE STORK was seen heading NW at 12:45hrs.

Mendlesham - An adult ROSE-COLOURED STARLING was seen in gardens in the village mid morning.

Lakenheath - Curlew Sand Lakenheath Fen RSPB.

Friday 12th.

Minsmere - Up to 3 adult Roseate Terns on south scrape throughout the day but mobile.

Thursday 11th.

Minsmere - IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF still singing along Eastbridge - Minsmere approach road opposite Saunders Hill.

Westleton - A gorgeous male Red-backed Shrike was found on Westleton Common at 09:30hrs though elusive (photo Andrew Moon).

Hollesley - 2 Wood Sands Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Wednesday 10th.

Southwold - No sign today of the male BLYTH'S REED WARBLER.

Minsmere - The male IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF continues to sing from the approach road to the reserve from Eastbridge nr Saunders Hill.

North Warren - SAVI'S WARBLER still audible from the viewing platform at the western edge of Fen reedbed.

Snape - Great Egret Botany Marshes.

Tuesday 9th.

Southwold - The male BLYTH'S REED WARBLER continues to sing in scrub just to the north of Marlborough Road heard from the gravel road.

Walberswick - Curlew Sand still on Tinkers Marsh.

Minsmere - The long staying IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF continues to sing along the approach road to the reserve near Is.mere

North Warren - The SAVI'S WARBLER was heard early morning from the viewing platform at the western end of Fen reedbed + male GOLDEN ORIOLE heard singing between 05:00-05:30hrs. A ringtail Harrier sp was seen over south marsh at 11:10hrs.

Hollesley - 2 Spoonbill still n the scrape.

Felixstowe - An adult ROSE-COLOURED STARLING was found by the point at LBO shortly ater 07:00hrs and remained on site until 08:15hrs when flew high south (photo Chris Courtney).

Needham Market - 2cy Caspian Gull at Pipps Ford.


ROSE-COLOURED STARLING - Will Brame.

Monday 8th.

Southwold - The singing male BLYTH'S REED WARBLER was again present in scrub along North Road though generally much more elusive today. An adult ROSE-COLOURED STARLING was seen in gardens (off Spinners Lane near The Common) this afternoon then flew south (photo John Nottage). 2 MARSH WARBLER were seen in the parish in suitable breeding habitat and remained until the 12th.

Walberswick - Curlew Sand seen on Tinkers Marsh this afternoon.

Dunwich - A Harrier sp seen north over the heath at 15:30hrs.

North Warren - The SAVI'S WARBLER continue's to sing from Fen reedbed, best heard from the viewing platform at the western fringe of the reedbed.

Thorpeness - ROSEATE TERN north offshore prior to 09:35hrs + Osprey north.

Hollesley - Female Red-backed Shrike seen in roadside hedges between Hollesley and Shingle Street today though elusive (photo James Kennerly) + 3 Spoonbill Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Sunday 7th.

Waveney Area - Great Egret present at Carlton Marshes.

Southwold - Following yesterday's bird at North Warren, another singing male BLYTH'S REED WARBLER was found in the county today with this individual being discovered in scrub/reedbed behind the cafe by the boating lake. The bird at times was singing and showing very well (photo Andrew Moon).

Dunwich - A BLACK-WINGED STILT was present on the shore pools near Dingle Hills before flying north at 07:54hrs.

Minsmere - The long-staying IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF continues to sing along the Eastbridge - Is.mere approach road by Saunders Hill. 3 Roseate Terns were present on south scrape (viewed from the public screen) between 13:00 - 13:50hrs then flew north and a single bird was present again late afternoon.

North Warren - A SAVI'S WARBLER was heard reeling from the viewing platform at the western edge of the reedbed (present since 2nd June). No sign today of the BLYTH'S REED WARBLER.

Hollesley - Single Spoonbill on the scrape at Hollesley Marshes.

Felixstowe - A Swift sp with a white-rump was seen over the ferry golfcourse and heading towards town at 11:45hrs.

Saturday 6th.

Minsmere - The male IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF was again heard singing from Saunders Hill + 4 Little Gull (all 1st summer) on south scrape. Please note that the reserve remains CLOSED until further notice.

North Warren - A singing BLYTH'S REED WARBLER was noted in the NE corner of the reed-bed in willow scrub just south of the level cottage though generally elusive.

Hollesley - Spoonbill on the scrape.

Playford - Osprey over today.

Friday 5th.

Blythburgh - Great Egret on the estuary early morning.

Minsmere - The male IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF is still present on Saunders Hill. On the scrape, 4 Little Gull (all 1st summer birds) remain viewable from the public viewing screen which is accessed via the beach. Please note that the reserve remains CLOSED.

Thorpeness - 2 Spotted Flycatchers at the old caravan park.

Felixstowe - Firecrest seen in the holm oaks at LBO.

Thursday 4th.

Blythburgh - Single Spoonbill on the Blyth Estuary.

Hollesley - 4 Spoonbill on the scrape at 09:30hrs then flew on to Havergate Island.

Ipswich - A ROSE-COLOURED STARLING was briefly seen in a garden in the Stoke Park area of the town before moving on.

Wednesday 3rd.

Waveney Area - No sign of the GREAT REED WARBLER at Carlton Marshes, but Cattle Egret seen early morning then flew towards Somerleyton at 06:15hrs + Spoonbill on the scrape & 2 Common Crane over mid morning.

Southwold - A male GREY HEADED WAGTAIL was present in the sheep paddocks at Easton Bavents before flying north at 06:16hrs.

North Warren - 2 Spoonbill on South Marsh early morning.

Stowmarket - A probable MARSH WARBLER was heard singing at the sewage works prior to 09:00hrs but was not heard to sign again.

Tuesday 2nd.

Waveney Area - A GREAT REED WARBLER was heard singing at Carlton Marshes SWT on the Aldby side of the river mid - late morning and sang infrequently throughout the afternoon/evening + 2 Cattle Egret that paid a brief visit to the reserve before flying off north at 10:45hrs.

Walberswick - A female Red-backed Shrike was noted behind the village hall late morning.

Aldeburgh - A Cattle Egret was noted east over the golf course this evening.

Worlingworth - GOLDEN ORIOLE noted.

Snape - No sign this morning of the Glossy Ibis at Botany Marsh today.

Felixstowe - A female/ 1st summer male COMMON ROSEFINCH was trapped at LBO this morning and remained in the compound throughout the afternoon/evening feeding on the feeder (photo Will Brame), also a MARSH WARBLER was heard singing by the pond along the butts though generally elusive.

Long  Melford- A MARSH WARBLER was heard singing on private land this evening

Monday 1st.

Waveney Area - 1st summer male RED-FOOTED FALCON south over Breydon south wall at 07:14hrs.

Minsmere - 4 Little Gull (all 1st summers) still on south scrape.

Snape - A Glossy Ibis was seen at Botany Marsh at 07:20hrs + drake Garganey.

Hollesley - 6 Spoonbill still on the scrape at Hollesley Marshes.

Bawdsey - A probable HONEY BUZZARD was seen to come off the cliffs early morning and then flew low south. 

Trimley Marshes - Curlew Sand seen on the winter flood early evening.
