NOVEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

Saturday 30th.

Lowestoft Area - Firecrests seen in Corton Wood, Kessingland sewage works and at Leathes Ham.

Southwold - 2 Purple Sands North of the pier.

Dunwich - 2 Snow Bunting North of beach car park + 6 Whooper Swan on Sandymount Pools

Minsmere - Pom Skua South offshore + 3 Snow Bunting in the dunes. A late Swallow was seen over Island Mere + 2nd winter Caspian Gull. On South levels, adult Caspian and YL Gulls seen.

North Warren - 47 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on North Marsh.

Aldeburgh - Great Northern Diver still on the Alde Estuary + Snow Bunting on the marshes.

Hollesley - 2 Caspian Gull on the scrape + 3 Short-eared Owl & 3 Eurasian White-fronted Geese seen between Hollesley - Boyton.

Bawdsey - The juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD was again seen at Bawdsey Marshes today viewable distantly from Ferry Road. (record shot Lee Woods).

Felixstowe - Short-eared Owl seen at the ferry.

Ipswich - 4 Ring-necked Parakeets in the old cemetery.

Friday 29th.

Thorpeness - Single Pomarine Skua offshore + 3 Little Auks.

Boyton - Single Pink-footed Goose on the marshes + 2 Eurasian White-fronted Geese.

Bawdsey - A juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD was seen near the quay early afternoon and remained until late afternoon at least being viewed from gate opposite the picnic site.

Deben Estuary - 2 Waxwing seen along the track to Kingsfleet, near-by a Short-eared Owl was seen at Felixstowe Ferry.

Trimley Marshes - Single Eurasian White-fronted Goose on the SWT reserve.

Ipswich - Firecrest seen in Christchurch Park by the wilderness pond.

Thursday 28th.

Lowestoft Area - Shag Oulton Broad yacht club.

Blythburgh - Hooded Merganser still East of the A12 road-bridge.

Thorpeness - 3 Goosander on the meare.

North Warren - 40 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on North Marsh.

Shingle Street - Short-eared Owl again present.

Felixstowe - 2 Purple Sands on the point this morning + drake Goosander South.

Ipswich - Immature Shag from Cliff quay + 1st winter Caspian Gull.

Wednesday 27th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Purple Sands at Ness Point + Black Redstart by the caravan park.

Southwold - Purple Sand still on groynes North of the pier (photo Andrew Moon).

Blythburgh - The drake Hooded Merganser remains on the river though distant.

Minsmere - The PALLAS'S WARBLER was again seen this morning within the mobile tit flock by the work centre.

Boyton Marshes - 7 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on the marsh + Pink-footed Goose.

Shingle Street - Short-eared Owl noted this afternoon.

Felixstowe - Velvet Scoter South off LBO.

Tuesday 26th.

Lowestoft Area - No sign today of the un-ringed PALLAS'S WARBLER at Kessingland sewage works but Yellow-browed Warbler still present.

Blythburgh - Drake Hooded Merganser still on the River Blyth est of the bridge.

Minsmere - PALLAS'S WARBLER seen amongst the tit flock between the work centre and Whin Hill.

Boyton - 7 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on the marshes.

Felixstowe - 2 Purple Sands at LBO on the point.

Ipswich - 4 Ring-necked Parakeets in the Old Cemetery. Escaped colour ringed Hooded Merganser still on the wilderness pond in Christchurch Park

Monday 25th.

Lowestoft Area - The 2nd PALLAS'S WARBLER of the autumn was found this afternoon at Kessingland. The bird favoured the Northern hedge of the sewage works though mobile as it moved around with the local tit flock, also Yellow-browed Warbler still present & 7 wild swans South probably Whooper Swans (photo Chris Courtney).

Blythburgh - Drake Hooded Merganser still on the river East of the bridge.

Minsmere - Yellow-browed Warbler seen briefly by the car park entrance, also 6 Caspian Gulls on the scrape +12 Goosander flew in to roost at dusk & Whooper Swan present. Pom Skua reported offshore.

Thorpeness - 7 Goosander on the meare.

Alde Estuary - Juvenile Shag still on the river by the martello tower at Slaughden.

Deben Estuary - No sign of the Black Brant on Falkenham Marshes but Pale-bellied Brent Goose present.

Sunday 24th.

Lowestoft Area - A late Yellow-browed Warbler was trapped, ringed and released at Kessingland sewage works this morning and remained in the area until 15:00hrs at least. 18 Waxwing again Clovelly Rise though mobile.

Easton - Shorelark seen by Easton Broad at 08:00hrs + 3 Twite near-by.

Thorpeness - 3 Goosander on the meare.

North Warren - 6 Snow Bunting on the beach opposite sluice cottage. 4 Tundra Bean Geese on North Marsh + 19 EWFG.

Alde Estuary - Juvenile Shag still off Slaughden yacht club this afternoon.

Deben Estuary - Adult Black Brant again on Falkenham Marshes then flew to the mudflats at Bawdsey (photo Peter Lakey).

Felixstowe - Single Snow Bunting at LBO + Great Northern Diver South offshore.

Saturday 23rd.

Lowestoft Area - 20 Waxwing Clovelly Rise today. 7 Whooper Swan still Carlton Marsh SWT on Peto's Marsh. 7 Whooper Swan still Carlton Marshes.

Southwold - 2 Caspian Gull (both 2nd winter) on Town Marsh in NE corner + 25 Pink-footed & 2 White-fronted Geese.

Blythburgh - 4 Caspian Gull on the Blyth Estuary + Drake Hooded Merganser on the River Blyth (photo Brian Small).

North Warren - 10 Tundra Bean Geese + 54 EWFG on North Marsh.

Hollesley Marshes - 3 adult Caspian Gull present.

Deben Estuary - Adult Back Brant Falkenham Marshes then flew onto the river. Short-eared Owl seen from Methersgate quay.

Felixstowe - 2 Velvet Scoter South viewed from the ferry this morning.

Friday 22nd.

Lowestoft Area - 22 Waxwing Crestview Road.  7 Whooper Swan Carlton Marsh SWT.

Covehithe - Lapland Bunting in stubble field North of the broad, near-by Water Pipit Easton broad + 2 Snow Bunting on the beach

Walberswick - 23 Snow Bunting on the beach by Corporation Marsh + 2 Twite (photo Barry Woodhouse).

Minsmere - 7 Bewicks Swan on the reserve + Snow Bunting in the dunes.

Thursday 21st.

Lowestot Area - 23 Waxwing Westhall Road.

Walberswick - 25 Snow Bunting on the beach.

Alde Estuary - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the river from brick quay

Snape - 7 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on Botany Marshes.

Felixstowe - 2 Tundra Bean Geese North off LBO + 2 Goosander South.

Ipswich - 2 Waxwing along Heath Road at 08:00hrs.

Ixworth - 52 Pink-footed Geese at Micklemere including a white collared individual + 20 Eurasian White-fronted Geese in fields just East of the pump house.

Barrow - 2 Raven over the village.

Wednesday 20th.

Lowestoft Area - 15 Waxwing still Gunton by the Westhall Road / Weston Road junction.

Easton - At least 1 Shorelark remained on the beach South of the broad + 12 Snow Bunting South.

Minsmere - Cattle Egret on the scrape.

North Warren - 29 Eurasian White-fronted Geese on North Marsh.

Alde Estuary - Juvenile Great Northern Diver still on the river viewed from TM.448.568.

Felixstowe - Little Auk North offshore at 11:27hrs + Great Northern Diver.

Ickworth - 2 Raven NE over Ickworth Park.

Tuesday 19th.

Lowestot Area - Waxwing's dominated the news in the North of the county today with 20 birds seen at Gunton at Weston Road / Crestview Drive junction, 17 birds at the junction of Wissett Way / Westhall Road and 4 birds still Ellough Rd / Coney Hill Beccles (photo Andrew Moon). Black Redstart Ness Point.

Easton - 2 Shorelark c1/4ml South of Easton Broad.

Walberswick - 1st winter EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL continues to favour the area o marsh just North of the central footpath on Corporation Marsh + 29 Snow Bunting, 2 Twite and Short-eared Owl.

Dunwich - A late Wheatear (probably Northern) seen briefly at the beach car park before flying off North.

Minsmere - 4 Snow Bunting still in the dunes + 9 White-fronted Geese seen briefly on the scrape before heading South.

Alde Estuary - The juvenile Great Northern Diver continues to show on the river off Brick dock and it or another was seen of Slaughden (photo Andrew Moon).


Gedgrave - Short-eared Owl at the South end of Gedgrave Marshes.

Hollesley - A late Whinchat was seen along the river wall by the pillbox at Hollesley Masrh RSPB.

Felixstowe - Single Snow Bunting on the beach at LBO.

Trimley Marshes - 1st winter drake Greater Scaup on the reservoir of the SWT reserve.

Monday 18th.

Lowestoft Area - 6 Waxwing still by the junction of Weston Road / Westhall Road Gunton. 5 Waxwing Ellough Road / Colney Hill Beccles still.

Walberswick - The long-staying EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL continues to show on Corporation Marshes + 27 Snow Bunting.

Minsmere - Long-tailed Duck and Pomarine Skua noted offshore today + 8 Snow Bunting in the dunes.

Aldringham - 3 Waxwing North over Aldringham Walks this morning.

Alde Estuary - The juvenile Great Northern Diver continues to show from brick dock.

Hollesley - Ring-tail Hen Harrier seen over Upper Hollesley Common.

Felixstowe - 3 Purple Sand on the point at LBO.

Sunday 17th.

Lowestoft Area - 3 Waxwing still Beccles by Ellough Rd / Colney Rd junction (photo Barry Woodhouse). 6 Waxwing in trees along B1127 Wrentham - Hendstead Rd near Woods Lane / Sotterley Road cross-roads. 6 Waxwing seen near the junction of Weston Road Crestview Drive, Gunton late afternoon. Snow Bunting Links Road car park. 5 Water Pipit seen at Herringfleet Marsh Somerleyton.

Covehithe - 2 Snow Bunting by the broad.

Southwold - Purple Sand North of the pier on sea defences.

Walberswick - The mobile 1st winter EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL continues to show on Corporation Marshes + 27 Snow Bunting, 4 Spotted Redshank and female Red-breasted Merg on the shore pools.

Minsmere - 2 Snow Bunting on the beach + 4 Bewicks Swan seen on levels viewable distantly from Whin Hill.

Alde Estuary - The juvenile Great Northern Diver continues to show of brick dock + 2 Snow Bunting briefly.

Havergate - 4 Caspian Gull on the RSPB reserve.

Hollesley - 4 Snow Bunting along the river wall at Hollesley Marsh RSPB + adult Caspian Gull on the scrape.

Deben Estuary - Ringtail Hen Harrier seen at Ramsholt. 2 Goosander off Stonner Point.

Trimley Marshes - Water Pipit trapped and ringed.

Waldringfield - 5 Waxwing SW over the village.

Saturday 16th.

Lowestoft Area - 7 Waxwing still by the entrance to North quay retail park opposite Costa Coffee. 3 Waxwing Ellough near Coney Hill junction Beccles. 3 Snow Bunting along North beach promenade South of Links Hill car park. 

Southwold - 3rd winter Caspian Gull in NE corner of Town Marsh + Purple Sand on most Northerly groyne from pier + 7 Snow Bunting North.

Walberswick - The 1st EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL continues to show on Corporation Marsh  though mobile + 27 Snow Bunting present.

Minsmere - 2 Waxwing briefly by the work centre before flying South. Offshore, Grey Phalarope & Pom Skua seen. 4 Bewick Swan seen distantly from Whin levels.

Alde Estuary - 6 White-fronted Geese on Town Marsh + Great Northern Diver on the river by brick dock.

Hollesley - 2 Caspian Gull Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Bawdsey - Pom Skua South off East Lane at 11:20hrs.

Felixstowe - 4 Snow Bunting present at LBO.

Trimley Marsh - Black Redstart at the SWT reserve.

Friday 15th.

Lowestoft Area - The 7 Waxwing remain by the roundabout to the entrance to North quay retail park opposite Costa. Little Auk North off Ness Point at 09:24hrs.

Southwold - A ringed Shag was seen on the boating lake, near-by 4 Snow Bunting by Covehithe Broad + Water Pipit.

Walberswick - The 1st winter EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL continues to show well on Corporation Marsh though mobile + 15 Snow Bunting & a 1st winter Iceland Gull noted. Single Snow Bunting still by the beach car park and showing very well.

Dunwich - Grey Phalarope offshore + 2 Pomarine Skua & 3 Bonxie noted.

Minsmere - The 1st winter Iceland Gull from Walberswick paid a brief visit to East scrape before returning back North to the shore pools. A Grey Phalarope was seen offshore heading North at 08:52hrs + 2 Pomarine Skuas noted.

Sizewell - Pomarine Skua offshore.

Alde Estuary - A ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD was seen late morning + 3 White-fronted Geese. A Firecrest seen in Aldeburgh.

Slaughden - Long-tailed Duck South offshore at 07:51hrs + 3 Bonxies noted. Singe Snow Bunting seen.

Felixstowe - A Ring Ouzel was trapped and ringed at LBO (photo Will Brame) + 4 Snow Bunting still present, offshore a Puffin was noted North at 09:48hrs.

Thursday 14th.

Lowestoft Area - 7 Waxwing by the entrance roundabout to North quay retail park.

Walberwick - The 1st winter EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL remains on Corporation Marsh.

Havergate - The mobile Wagtail present on the RSPB reserve was confirmed as an EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL by sonogram analysis. If accepted, this will consist of the 2nd record for the county following the recent discovery of the 1st record o the Walberswick individual, which also needs to be accepted by the relevant committees.

Felixstowe - 6 Snow Bunting still at LBO + Great Northern Dover North offshore.

Wednesday 13th.

Walberswick - The 1st winter EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL remains faithful to the same area beach on Corporation Marsh or the past few days and continues to show well + 8 Snow Bunting & Short-eared Owl noted. Snow Bunting by Dunwich beach car park

Thorpeness - A Pomarine Skua was seen offshore today

Orfordness - A PENDULINE TIT was trapped, ringed and released on the NT reserve.

Havergate - The probable EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL was again seen on the island today and recordings of it's call were taken (photos c/o Peter Kennerley)

Hollesley - The DUSKY WARBLER was re-trapped at the private site within the village today + Long-eared Owl seen prior to dawn.

Bawdsey - 2 Purple Sands still on the sea defences.

Felixstowe - 5 Snow Bunting on the beach at LBO + 2 Purple Sands on the point.

Ipswich - A ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD was seen North over Cliff quay at 13:00hrs.


Tuesday 12th.

Lowestoft Area - Black Redstart at Ness Point.

Walberswick - 1st winter EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL still present on Corporation Marsh, also 8 Snow Bunting & 2 Great Egrets noted.

Minsmere - 5 Bewicks Swan on South scrape.

Havergate - A probable EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL was seen on the RSPB reserve then lost to vie at 09:30hrs.

Bawdsey - 2 Purple Sands on the sea defences.

Felixstowe - 5 Snow Bunting still on the point at LBO + 2 Purple Sands.

Lakenheath - A ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD was seen over Newmans Drove.

Monday 11th.

Walberswick - The 1st winter EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL continues to show well on Corporation Marsh + 8 Snow Bunting.

Felixstowe - 4 Snow Bunting still present on the point at LBO.

Sunday 10th.

Lowestot Area - 2 HUME'S LEAF WARBLERS (photo Andrew Moon) along Flycatcher Alley today. Little Auk North early afternoon. The PALLAS'S WARBLER continues to show well at Kessingland sewage works + near-by 9 Snow Bunting shore pools

Walberswick - The 1st winter EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL continues to show on Corporation Marsh + ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD over at 13:17hrs (photo Will Brame) & 8 Snow Bunting + 2 Twite on the beach. Offshore, a Little Auk was noted.

Minsmere - Little Auk North offshore at 14:10hrs + Pom Skua and Great Northern Diver noted.

Aldeburgh - An Eastern type Lesser Whitethroat was seen.

Orford - Ring Ouzel seen.

Hollesley - A DUSKY WARBLER was trapped and ringed at a private ringing site within the village.

Shingle Street - 2 Short-eared Owls present.

Bawdsey - 2 Firecrest at the picnic site.

Felixstowe - 4 Snow Bunting still LBO. Little Auk off Cobbolds Point at 15:00hrs drifting North close offshore.

Saturday 9th.

Lowestot Area - A HUME'S LEAF WARBLER was found along Flycatcher Alley at 12:15hrs and remained until dusk. A PALLAS'S WARBLER was trapped this morning at Kessingland sewage works. 4 Black Redstart by the SLP building at Ness Point + 9 Purple Sands on the sea defences.

Walberswick - The 1st winter EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL was today confirmed as such from sonograms of the birds call. The bird continued to show well as it spent most of it's time just North of the central path on Corporation Marsh + 2 Western Yellow Wagtails. Also seen were 3 Great Egrets, 8 Snow Bunting and single Spotted Redshank. Park at Dunwich beach car park (free of charge) and walk North along shingle ridge or approx 2.5 km.

Dunwich - A HUME'S LEAF WARBLER was seen amongst the tit flock by the eastern edge of Scottshall Covert along track at TM469679.

Felixstowe - A HUME'S LEAF WARBLER was discovered along the tomline wall opposite the gold clubhouse at the ferry at 14:20hrs and was still present and calling until dusk. A Puffin was seen North offshore from LBO at 08:03hrs + 4 Snow Bunting on the beach.

Micklemere - A ring-tail Hen Harrier was seen to fly over the A143 near Micklemere at 09:30hrs.

Friday 8th.

Walberswick - The probable EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL was again seen and heard on Corporation Marshes late morning + a very late Western Yellow Wagtail in the area & 9 Snow Bunting on the beach. Waxwing heard early morning. Park at Dunwich beach car park and walk North for 2.5 km to view area of marsh the bird is favouring.

Felixstowe - 6 Snow Bunting at LBO. Black Redstart seen in the dock complex on shed 31.

Thursday 7th.

Walberswick - A probable EASTERN YELLOW WAGTAIL was present on grazing marsh (roughly halfway between Dunwich beach car park and Walberswick) where the public footpath meets the beach late morning and then again late afternoon in reed bed inland of Sandy Mount Wood (West of Great Dingle Hill), the bird has been present in the area for up to eleven days though mobile. 


Note: Park ONLY in Dunwich village and walk North for 1.25 miles along Dingle track (access from Bridge Farm) DO NOT drive up at the track. After 1.25 miles, permission has been granted to allow birders in the field on the left where the bird was last seen today that overlooks the reed bed and area where the digger has been working, please under any circumstances DO NOT enter any other field due to livestock being present.

Minsmere - A PENDULINE TIT was seen behind West hide between 13:45-15:00hrs (photo Andrew Moon).

Felixstowe - BLACK-THROATED DIVER, Great Northern Diver and Pomarine Skua all seen offshore from LBO this morning + the 3 Snow Bunting remain.

Bucklesham - Raven seen over the The Shannon

Wednesday 6th.

Lowestoft Area - Little Auk North off Ness Point at 11:28hrs. Great Egret Carlton Marsh SWT.

Minsmere - 7 Bewicks Swan on East scrape (photo Peter Lakey) + adult YLG. Short-eared Owl behind South hide + Whooper Swan. Great Northern Diver South offshore at 13:25hrs.

Sizewell - 3 Twite on the beach South of the boats.

Slaughden - Little Auk North offshore at 11:50hrs + Long-tailed Duck South at midday.

Hollesley - Great Egret showing well on the flooded field at Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Felixstowe - 2 Little Auk South off LBO of which one was taken out by a Peregrine. On the beach, 3 Snow Bunting by the point.

Tuesday 5th.

Lowestoft Area - HOOPOE Bradwell by Lord's Lane in horse paddock at Cley Road/Doles Lane junction later afternoon.

Benacre - Black Redstart by the sluice.

Dunwich - 1+ Great Egret on the shore pools.

Minsmere - 7 Bewicks Swan on South scrape + Great Egret still present on the reserve. Male Hen Harrier from Bittern hide.

Eastbridge - A SIBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF was seen in hedgerow East of the pine belt along the public footpath between Eastbridge - Minsmere sluice.

Thorpeness - Female Goosander on the mere.

Felixstowe - Snow Bunting still present at LBO + Tree Sparrow. Firecrest Felixstowe Ferry.

Trimley Marshes - Firecrest.

Monday 4th.

Benacre - 5 Snow Bunting by the broad, near-by Water Pipit at Easton Broad & Short-eared Owl at the Bavents.

Minsmere - 6 Bewicks Swan on the scrape + 3 Firecrest, Great Egret & redhead Goosander around the reserve.

Sizewell - 2 Black Redstart in front of Sizewell A power station.

Snape - A PURPLE HERON was reported from the maltings as it was seen to fly from the riverbank.

Shingle Street - 3 Short-eared Owl present this afternoon.

Bawdsey - Pomarine Skua South of East Lane at 13:50hrs + fem Greater Scaup on the 1st lagoon.

Felixstowe - Black Redstart, Firecrest and Snow Bunting all at LBO.

Elveden - A Raven was seen well today.

Sunday 3rd.

Lowestoft Area - A HOOPOE as seen at Burgh Castle by the holiday park.  Snow Bunting seen by the sluice at Kessingland.

Southwold - Great Egret South over the golf course / Town Marsh early morning + 4 Firecrest around the town.

Dunwich - 3 Great Egret Dingle Marshes + 4 Whooper Swan South. 6 Twite North of beach car park associating with the Linnet flock.

Minsmere - Whooper Swan viewable from North hide + 8 Bewicks Swan on South scrape. Firecrests seen by the diping pond and in the sluice bushes.

Sizewell - 2 Firecrest in the NE corner of Dower House.

Hollesley - Black Redstart around the car park at Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Shingle Street - 2 Short-eared Owls late afternoon.

Bawdsey - 2+ Firecrest around the picnic site.

Lakenheath - Great Egret on the RSPB reserve + Water Pipit.


Saturday 2nd.

Minsmere - 4 Bewicks Swan still on East scrape.

Shingle Street - Short-eared Owl seen at 15:50hrs.

Felixstowe - Snow Bunting still on the point at LBO + Firecrest.

Stour Estuary - Slavonian Grebe noted of the walls at Manningtree.

Friday 1st.

Lowestoft Area - A PALLAS'S WARBLER was discovered in Belle Vue Park late morning and commuted between here and Sparrows Nest Park throughout the afternoon.

Covehithe - 5 Whooper Swan in off.

Minsmere - 4 Bewicks Swan on South scrape.

Aldeburgh - Up to 4 Firecrest noted around the town. 

Slaughden - Snow Bunting, Merlin and Woodcock noted.
