OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS

Wednesday 31st.

Lowestoft Area - Little Auk North off Ness Point at 11:30hrs.

Southwold - The 1st winter Red-breasted Flycatcher was again seen on the campsite and showing well.

Minsmere - Long-eared Owl viewable from South hide and showing well (photo David Carter). Ringtail Hen Harrier seen from West hide. Offshore a Slavonian Grebe was noted.

Thorpeness - 18 Common Crossbill South over the old caravan park + Firecrest.

North Warren - 1cy Caspian Gull on South scrape + Water Pipit. Firecrest seen by sluice cottage.

Boyton - 9 Pink-footed Geese Boyton Marshes.

Felixstowe - Firecrests seen at LBO & Peewit Hill.

Trimley SWT - Great Egret seen on the reservoir early morning.

Tuesday 30th.

Benacre - 8 Snow Bunting still on the beach + Little Auk offshore.

Great Barton - Great Grey Shrike still present this morning along Livermere road by Green Farm (present c3 weeks).

Monday 29th.

Lowestoft Area - The confiding 2 Shorelark remain just North of the sluice at Kessingland.

Benacre - 8 Snow Bunting on the beach + Lesser Whitethroat in scrub by the hide. Offshore a Great Northern Diver was seen on the sea before flying South.

Southwold - The Red-breasted Flycatcher remained along the Western edge of the campsite viewed by the wooden shower block and showing well (photo Eddie Marsh). Firecrest still in Waters copse. Little Auk North offshore at 12:50hrs.

Minsmere - Glossy Ibis on the scrape + Great Egret on Island Mere.

Aldeburgh - The Hawfinch was again seen in the churchyard.

Shingle Street - Yellow-browed Warbler seen by the allotments.

Havergate - Long-eared Owl, 2 Short-eared Owl + 2 Caspian Gull (ad & 2cy) on the RSPB reserve.

Boyton - 12 Pink-footed Geese on Boyton Marshes.

Felixstowe -Firecrest seen along the tomline wall.

Great Barton - Great Grey Shrike seen along Livermere Road this afternoon though mobile.

Sunday 28th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Short-eared Owl in off at Gunton Cliffs. Short-eared Owl close in from North Denes. Little Auk South from Hamilton Dock. Black Redstart & Purple Sand Ness Point.

Benacre - Little Auk seen from the broad + 5 Snow Buntings & 2 Purp Sands.

Southwold - A Red-breasted Flycatcher was discovered at 11:40 in willow trees by the wooden shower block on the West side of the campsite at 11:40hrs and remained until mid afternoon at least. (photo Brain Small and Andrew Moon below). A single Waxwing was seen in St.Edmundsbury churchyard on the West side at 13:40hrs though mobile. Firecrest seen in Waters Copse. The highlights offshore included; 4 Little Auk, Manx Shearwater, Slav Grebe, 16 Bonxie & Snow Bunting.

Dunwich - 3 Great Egrets at Dingle shorepools, 10 Twite on the shingle ridge + 2 Snow Bunting & juv Glaucous Gull South offshore.

Minsmere - Ringtail Hen Harrier seen from Island Mere at 15:50hrs.


Theberton - Rough-legged Buzzard seen.

Aldeburgh - Hawfinch in the church yard. 2 Twite around the fishing huts just South of Moot Hall.

Slaughden - Little Auk, 2 Sooty Shearwater & 9 Little Gulls were noted offshore.

Bawdsey - Short-eared Owl in off.

Felixstowe - Long-eared Owl, Little Auk & Ring Ouzel reported from LBO.

Trimley SWT - Cattle Egret & Great Egret on the reserve.

Saturday 27th.

Lowestoft Area - The 2 Shorelark remain on Kesingland beach and continue to show well (photo Barry Woodhouse). Yellow-browed Warbler seen in Fen Park. Up to 16 Short-eared Owls seen offshore today + 2 Long-eared Owl. Little Auk seen sat on the sea at Kessingland.

Covehithe - Ring Ouzel seen to come in off.

Minsmere - Great Egret on the reserve. Little Auk offshore.

Blythburgh - A drake HOODED MERGANSER of unknown origin was seen on the Blyth Estuary in channel by the church.

Aldeburgh - 6 Little Auks, Great Northern Diver, 5 Bonxies, 2 Velvet Scoter, 29 Eider, 1 Shag, Long-eared Owl,, 2 Short-eared Owl & Woodcock in off. Ring-tail Hen Harrier & 2 Jack Snipe on the marshes.

Great Liveremere - Greater Scaup on Livermere Lake.

Friday 26th.

Lowestoft Area - Probable Siberian Chiffchaff seen on North Denes + 2 Velvet Scoter offshore. 2 Shorelark remain just North of Kessingland sluice + Velvet Scoter North offshore. 2 Pom Skuas South off Corton at 16:00hrs. 5 Pom skua South off Hopton + 2 Greater Scaup.

Covehithe - Great Egret on the broad.

Southwold - Puffin North at 07:56hrs.

Minsmere - SEO seen to come in off

Thorpeness - Pom Skua seen lingering offshore.

North Warren - No sign of the reported Thrush Nightingale this morning but Ring Ouzel noted.

Boyton - 12 Pink-footed Geese on Boyton Marshes.

Thursday 25th.

Loestoft Area - 2 Shorelark still 200 yards North of the sluice.

Minsmere - No sign of the juvenile Little Bittern today. Cattle Egret came into roost on Island Mere at 17:41hrs.

Thorpeness - A probable Thrush Nightingale was seen between the viewing platforms in scrub along the Coast Rd at 13:00hrs.

Boyton - 3 Bewicks Swan in off and landed near Boyton Dock.

Felixstowe - Water Pipit seen on the ferry saltings.

Wednesday 24th.

Lowestoft Area - a single Waxwing flew NW over The Hollies, Kessingland at 11:56hrs.

Minsmere - A juvenile LITTLE BITTERN was discovered early afternoon along the North wall in reedbed by the sluice and remained and until dusk when presumably went to roost. 2 Whooper Swan were seen to come in off early morning.

Snape - Ringtail Harrier sp seen over Snape crossroad at 13:42hrs.

Trimley - Great Egret seen on Trimley Marsh SWT.

Tuesday 23rd.

Lowestoft Area - 1 Shorelark remained just North of the sluice at Kessingland. (photo Andrew Moon).

Southwold - Short-eared Owl in off + 3 Bonxies.

Minsmere - 3 Greater Scaup (1 drake) on the sea before flying South + Velvet Scoter North & 4 Bonxies.

Havergate - Ringtail Hen Harrier, Short-eared Owl & Spoonbill on the RSPB reserve.

Monday 22nd.

Lowestoft Area - The 2 Shorelarks were again just North of the beach at Kessingland.

Minsmere - Whooper Swan on Island Mere.

Great Livermere - 3 Whooper Swan on Livermere Lake.

Sunday 21st.

Lowestoft Area - Adult Cattle Egret on hare Marsh Carlton Marsh SWT. The 2 Shorelark (photo David Carter) were again just North of Kessingland sluice and showing well, near-by a Lapland Bunting (photo Chris Courtney) was present in the dunes though generally elusive. (photo David Carter).

Southwold - 2 Great Egrets over Town Marsh shortly after 09:00hrs.

Minsmere - Cattle Egret again on Island Mere + 2 Great Egrets on the reserve.

Aldeburgh - 3 Yellow-browed Warbler seen around the town today

Felixstowe - Shorelark seen by the point mid morning (photo Will Brame).

Saturday 20th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Shorelark seen just North of Kessingland sluice.

Southwold - A Pallas's Warbler was discovered at the camp site by the toilet block just after 08:00hrs and showed well throughout (photo Brian Small & Andrew Moon)

Minsmere - No sign of the Ferruginous Duck today. Crossbill North over the car park and a Short-eared Owl was seen to come in off. Cattle Egret was again seen on Island Mere at dusk + Great Egret.

Thorpeness - Yellow-browed Warbler still around the allotments + Jack Snipe flushed from the beach early morning.

North Warren - Hobby seen hawking over the main reed-bed early afternoon.

Felixstowe - No sign of the Hoopoe today but the Tree Pipit (photo Will Brame) remains in the ditch opposite the Customs House. Yellow-browed Warbler present at the Millennium Green, Felixstowe Ferry.

Friday 19th.

Lowestoft Area - Ad Cattle Egret still on Carlton Marsh SWT. 3 Yellow-browed Warblers along the old rail track. 2 Yellow-browed Warbler seen from the cycle track.

Benacre - Yellow-browed Warbler in the copse to the east of Beach Farm + Great Egret on the Broad.

Minsmere - The FERRUGINOUS DUCK continues to show on South Girder

Aldringham - Yellow-browed Warbler seen within the tit flock on Aldringham Walks.

Aldeburgh - Yellow-browed Warbler still in the churchyard + another 2 Yellow-browed Warbler seen & Ring Ouzel seen in the area.

Hollesley - No sign today of the juvenile LESSER YELLOWLEGS on Hollesley Marsh RSPB.

Felixstowe - A Hoopoe was seen late afternoon at LBO, ranging between the cottage and compound. Tree Pipit present by the Customs House along Viewpoint Road.(photo Will Brame).

Thursday 18th.

Lowestoft Area - Yellow-browed Warbler's were today noted just north of Corton church in hedgerow, Gunton Woods & 2 along the old railtrack at Gunton. Short-eared Owl noted over Gunton Warren.

Minsmere - 2 Great Egrets on the reserve + long-staying FERRUGINOUS DUCK remains.

Aldeburgh - Yellow-browed Warbler present in the church yard.

Havergate - Merlin seen over Havergate island RSPB.

Hollesley - The juvenile LESSER YELLOWLEGS continues to show from the river wall.

Felixstowe - Black Redstart seen at Landguard + Tree Pipit seen by the Customs House

Lackford - Great Egret at Lackford Lakes SWT.

Wednesday 17th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Yellow-browed Warblers trapped and ringed at Kessingland sewage works. 2 Yellow-browed Warbler along the cycle track.

Minsmere - Yellow-browed Warbler seen by the workshop. 3 Great Egret still on Island Mere.

Thorpeness - 2 Yellow-browed Warbler remain at the old caravan park though elusive.

Hollesley - Juv LESSER YELLOWLEGS still on the scrape.

Eastbridge - The Cattle Egret was again viewable from the eels foot inn public house car park this afternoon. (photo Stewart Belfield).

Felixstowe - A Little Bunting was reported South over Landguard at 07:40hrs.

Tuesday 16th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were seen at the Northern end of the old railtrack + a Pipit sp either Tree or Olive-backed was heard. Yellow-browed Warbler's seen at Hubbards Loke, Gunton & Corton disused rail track. 5 Snow Bunting still on Gunton North beach. (photo Paul Leath).

Thorpeness - 2 Yellow-browed Warblers still present at the old caravan park.

Havergate - Juv Curlew Sand on the RSPB island.

Hollesley - Juv LESSER YELLOWLEGS still on the RSPB reserve.

Bawdsey - Yellow-browed Warbler seen at East Lane by the bonfire.

Felixstowe - Yellow-browed Warbler still present within the compound at LBO.

Monday 15th.

Lowestoft Area - A Pallas's Warbler was along the Southern side of Gunton Warren near the car park early afternoon + possible Greenish Warbler seen very briefly. Yellow-browed Warbler seen early morning in Malster's Score & Gunton Woods. 5 Snow Bunting on Gunton North beach. (photo Paul Leath)

Minsmere - 3 Yellow-browed Warbler's noted today on the reserve, 2 by the work centre & 1 by the old car park. The Great Egret was on pools behind West hide and the Ferruginous Duck remains on South Girder. Pallas's Warbler seen in bushes by East hide.

Thorpeness - 3 Yellow-browed Warbler at the old caravan park.

Orford - Yellow-browed Warbler seen by the quay at 13:40hrs.

Hollesley - Juvenile LESSER YELLOWLEGS & Black Tern still remain.

Shingle Street - Yellow-browed Warbler in the garden South of the martello tower.

Sunday 14th.

Lowestoft Area - The adult Cattle Egret continues to show on the scrape at Carlton Marshes. Yellow-browed Warblers were seen today by the cemetery near the cycle track by Normanstone Drive (2), Fallowfields, Oulton (1) Sparrow's Nest Park (2) & Gunton Woods (2+). 6 Snow Bunting on the beach at Gunton.

Southwold - Lapland Bunting South over the denes at 09:19hrs.

Minsmere - Cattle Egret still on Island Mere + Ferruginous Duck remains on the reserve. Yellow-browed Warbler again by the work centre.

Aldeburgh - Yellow-browed Warbler noted.

Hollesley - The juvenile LESSER YELLOWLEGS remains on RSPB reserve + Black Tern.

Woodbridge - A possible LAUGHING GULL was noted in front of the yacht club on the Deben Estuary before flying down river towards Kyson.

Felixstowe - Yellow-browed Warbler still present at LBO at the the Southern end of the compound.

Saturday 13th.

Lowestoft Area - Cattle Egret still Carlton Marshes. Yellow-browed Warblers were today seen along the cycle track by boardwalk section of Water Lane Sports Centre, (3) along the cycle track near the cemetery South of Normanstone Drive, Corton disused railtrack, Kirkley Ham in scyamores at bottom of John Street & North Denes near slope down to Links road car park. 2 Pied Flys Malster's Score. 3 Snow Bunting Gunton beach.

Benacre - Lapland Bunting seen in tilled field by pill box from track South to Beach Farm. (photo Andrew Moon).

Minsmere - Ferruginous Duck still on pools behind South hide. Yellow-browed Warbler between work centre & car park.

Aldeburgh - Yellow-browed Warbler present. 2 Jack Snipe on Town Marshes + Whinchat.

Hollesley - Juv LESSER YELLOWLEGS still present and showing distantly from the river wall.

Shingle Street - Yellow-browed Warbler seen today.

Felixstowe - Yellow-browed Warbler seen within the compound at LBO + Great Egret over the common and then South out to sea. A Siberian Chiffchaff was noted in woods by the ferry golf clubhouse, near-by a Continental Coal tit was seen in Golf Rd car park.

Friday 12th.

Lowestoft Area - 3 Common Crane Nth over London Road at 07:15hrs. A Yellow-browed Warbler was heard from within the garden of 60 Yarmouth Road near the bus stop. Short-eared Owl in off at Ness Point.

Minsmere - The Ferruginous Duck was again on South Girder pools + 2 Great Egrets on the scrape.

Hollesley - The juvenile LESSER YELLOWLEGS continues to show in the NE corner of the scrape albeit distantly from the river wall + Merlin.

Thursday 11th.

Lowestoft Area - The adult Cattle Egret remains on the scrape at Carlton Marsh SWT. Yellow-browed Warbler noted along Corton disused railtrack.

Minsmere - Both the Ferruginous Duck & Cattle Egret were again seen on the reserve. Yellow-browed Warbler trapped & ringed.

Thorpeness - Yellow-browed Warbler at the old caravan park + Pied Flycatcher.

Hollesley - The juvenile LESSER YELLOWLEGS was again seen on the scrape viewable from the river wall.

Felixstowe - Yellow-browed Warbler trapped & ringed at LBO. Yellow-browed Warbler seen along the tomline wall opposite the ferry golf club house.

Wednesday 10th.

Lowestoft Area - 2 Yellow-browed Warblers along the disuded rail-track at Gunton + Ring Ouzel. Yellow-browed Warbler seen in the Southern most hedge at James Paget Hospital, Gorleston.

Minsmere - Cattle Egret still present on Island Mere + Ferruginous Duck still on South Girder pool.

Hollesley - LESSER YELLOWLEGS still on the scrape at the RSPB reserve.

Bawdsey - 1+ Yellow-browed Warbler along the concrete track at East Lane.

Felixstowe - Yellow-browed Warbler seen at LBO in elders by Darrell'd Battery 75 yards South of Viewpoint car park.

Trimley - Ring Ouzel trapped & ringed at Trimley Marshes SWT.

Needham Market - Rough-legged Buzzard seen SW over Pipps Ford at 15:45hrs.

Tuesday 9th.

Lowestoft Area - A Barred Warbler was briefly seen on an Oulton Broad garden before flying towards the rail-track. Yellow-browed Warblers were seen at the following; (2) Corton disused railtrack, (3) Gunton Woods (1) by the lighthouse & (1) Pakefiled in copse just South of Heathlands.

Walberswick - Ringtail Hen Harrier Westwood Marshes + Great Egret Dunwich.

Minsmere - Cattle Egret still being seen on the reserve + Ferruginous Duck still present.

Hollesley - The juvenile LESSER YELLOWLEGS continues to show on the scrape at Hollesley Marsh RSPB from the river wall.

Monday 8th.

Lowestoft Area - Cattle Egret again Carlton Marshes. Yellow-browed Warblers were seen at Corton radar lodge (2), Corton old railway track (2), Linear Park (3) and a single bird at Sparrows Nest Park.

Southwold - A Wryneck seen along the footpath between the sewage works & flash this afternoon + Yellow-browed Warbler. Yellow-browed Warbler seen in the churchyard.

Minsmere - The Ferruginous Duck remains on South girder pool + Yellow-browed Warbler by the work centre.

Eastbridge - The Cattle Egret was seen from the Eels Foot Inn this morning.

Hollesley - Juvenile LESSER YELLOWLEGS remains on the scrape at the RSPB reserve viewed from the river wall.

Shingle Street - 2 Yellow-browed Warblers noted by the allotments.

Bawdsey - Yellow-browed Warbler seen along the concrete track at East Lane.

Sunday 7th.

With the on-set of favourable winds, an unprecedented arrival of Yellow-browed Warblers took place today with the following birds noted at;


Lowestoft Area - (2) Flycatcher Alley, (4) Warren Lane, Gorleston, (4) Radar Lodge, Corton, (1) Corton NSW, (2) Southern end of Corton Wood, (4) Corton old railtrack, (3) Stirrups Lane, Corton, (1) Corton churchyard, (1) Kirkley Fen, (1) Kirkley cemetery, (1) Gunton Warren, (3) Gunton Woods, (1) North Denes, (3) Sparrows Nest Park, (2) along cycle track between Water Lane boardwalk & St. Margarets roadbridge, (1) Evergreen Road cycle track, (1) Gunton railtrack, (1) Mutford, (2) Burgh Castle & (1) Kessingland Sewage Works.

Southwold - (4) Churchyard, (1) Gun Hill, (1) Campsite & (1) Easton Bavents.

Saturday 6th.

Lowestoft Area - A Little Bunting was seen at Ness Point early afternoon though mobile.

Minsmere - The Ferruginous Duck & Cattle Egret remain on the reserve. Yellow-browed Warbler present in the sluice bushes.

Thorpeness - Single Yellow-browed Warblers were seen at the Haven & Old caravan park.

Aldeburgh - The Glossy Ibis remains on Town Marshes though mobile today + 3 Jack Snipe & Whinchat.

Shingle Street - The juvenile LESSER YELLOWLEGS was again seen on pools South of the martello tower until 11:24hrs when flew North and was relocated on the scrape at Hollesley Marshes viewed from the river wall.

Bawdsey - 1+ Yellow-browed Warber seen along the cliffs + 2 Common Redstart & Merlin noted.

Felixstowe - Yellow-browed Warbler seen at LBO + 2 Ring Ouzels.

Friday 5th.

Minsmere - Ferrginous Duck still present + Cattle Egret & 4 Great Egrets noted on Island Mere.

Eastbridge - The Cattle Egret from Island Mere was seen in with cattle from the Eels Foot Inn car park.

Thorpeness - A Yellow-browed Warbler was seen in the NE corner of the old caravan park.

Aldeburgh - The Glossy Ibis continues to show ell on Town Marshes + ring-tail Hen Harrier.

Felixstowe - An adult Honey Buzzard was seen to fly South over Peewit Hill mid afternoon. The Yellow-browed Warbler remains at the Millennium Green at the ferry.

Thursday 4th.

Dunwich - Great Egret on the shorepools.

Minsmere - Cattle Egret seen on Island Mere though mobile + Great Egret. Ferruginous Duck still on South Girder.

Aldeburgh - The Glossy Ibis was again seen on Town Marshes.

Snape - Ringtail Harrier sp (probably Hen) seen over Botany Marshes

Shingle Street - The juvenile LESSER YELLOEWLEGS was present on the pools until 07:25hrs when flushed and flew North.

Felixstowe - Yellow-browed Warbler seen by the millennium green at the ferry.

Wednesday 3rd.

Lowestoft Area - Cattle Egret seen 1/3 mile South of the pump house along the South wall at Breydon Water.

Minsmere - The Ferruginous Duck, Cattle Egret, Glossy Ibis & Great Egret seen on the reserve today.

Shingle Street - A juvenile LESSER YELLOWLEGS was discovered late afternoon on the shorepools 200 yards South of the martello tower.

Felixstowe - Yellow-browed Warbler still at LBO.

Tuesday 2nd.

Minsmere - Ferruginous Duck still on South Girder pool + adult Caspian Gull on East scrape.

Aldeburgh - Glossy Ibis again on Town Marshes.

Felixstowe - Yellow-brrowed Warbler seen at LBO.

Monday 1st.

Minsmere - Cattle Egret present on Island Mere seen roosting on Island Mere early evening + Ferruginous Duck still present on South Girder + Great Egret & Caspian Gull on the reserve.

Woodbridge - Hawfinch seen in a Broomheath garden then flew towards the town.
