SEPTEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

Sunday 30th.

Lowestoft Area - A Blyth's Reed Warbler was discovered late afternoon on North Denes in bracken just North of the oval and remained until dusk though very elusive. Yellow-browed Warblers seen at Corton, Gunton & Kessingland Sewage Works..

Covehithe - Snow Bunting South at 08:24hrs + 3 Caspian Gull & 24 Y L Gulls in the pigfields.

Southwold - Great Egret flew over at 12:30hrs and headed up the Blyth Est.

Minsmere - Ferruginous Duck still on South Girder.

Sizewell - 1cy Caspian Gull off the rigs + 5 Little Gulls.

Thorpeness - Honey Buzzard reported in off at 10:30hrs.

Aldeburgh - Ringtail Hen Harrier North over Town Marshes at 12:30hrs.

Orfordness - No sign of the Hoopoe but SEO noted.

Felixstowe - Yellow-browed Warbler trapped at LBO.

Saturday 29th.

Lowestoft Area - Cattle Egret still on Carlton Marshes.

Minsmere - Ferruginous Duck still on South Girder + Snow Bunting briefly on the scrape.

Aldeburgh - Glossy Ibis seen again on Town Marshes. Pied Fly seen in the churchyard.

Shingle Street - Yellow-browed Warbler trapped & ringed.

Bawdsey - Yellow-browed Wabler seen in tamarisk by the quay.

Felixstowe - 2 Yellow-browed Warblers present at LBO today (1 trapped & ringed).

Friday 28th.

Southwold - Sooty Shearwater North at 07:00hrs.

Minsmere - Juvenile Ferruginous Duck on South scrape and South Girder.

Aldeburgh - No sign of the Glossy Ibis on Town Marshes, nearby 1st winter Caspian Gull on the beach.

Thursday 27th.

Lowestoft Area - The first Yellow-browed Warblers of the autumn were seen today with singletons present at Ness Point & Sparrows Nest Park.

Minsmere - The juvenile Ferruginous Duck remained on South girder behind South hide.

Aldeburgh - The Glossy Ibis continues to show on Town Marshes. (photo Mark Cornish).

Wednesday 26th.

Lowestoft Area - A Barred Warbler was found this morning in tamarisk bushes at Ness Point by the Birds Eye Factory.

Minsmere - Juv Ferruginous Duck still on pools behind South hide.

Snape - Great Egret on Botany Marshes.

Felixstowe - 2 juvenile Ring-necked Parakeets at LBO.

Ipswich - 4 Ring-necked Parakeets seen in Cotswold/Cheltenham Avenue this morning.

Tuesday 25th.

Minsmere - A juvenile Ferruginous Duck (photo David Carter) was found on pools behind South hide and remained all day + Gt Egret Island Mere.

Felixstowe - 2 Pied Fly at LBO.

Cavenham - Grey Phalarope still on Cavenham GP's viewed from the river bank.

Monday 24th.

Westleton - Ringtail Harrier sp seen South over the heath at 09:55hrs.

Minsmere - Little Stint on East scrape.

Sizewell - 1CY Caspian Gull, 15 Little Gull off the rigs & 2 Arctic Skua North.

Thorpeness - Arctic Skua North.

Aldeburgh - Glossy Ibis still on Town Marshes.

Felixstowe - 2 Spot Fly at LBO + Woodlark.

Cavenham - The Grey Phalarope was again seen on Cavenham Pits at 16:00hrs viewed from the river bank. (photo Barry Woodhouse).

Sunday 23rd.

Lowestoft Area - A juvenile Long-tailed Skua was noted off Gunton.

Minsmere - 2 Common Crane South at 16:45hrs + Little Stint & 5 Curlew Sands on East scrape.

Aldeburgh - Glossy Ibis still on Town Marshes.

Felsham - Osprey noted.

Martlesham - Osprey again seen at Kyson Point.

Cavenham - A Grey Phalarope was found on Cavenham Pits, view distantly from river bank.

Saturday 22nd.

A flock of 9 Spoonbill were tarcked along the coast this morning as follows;

Lowestoft - 07:40hrs

Minsmere - 08:23hrs

Slaughden - 08:41hrs

Felixstowe - 09:17hrs.


Lowestoft Area - Ad Cattle Egret still Carlton Marshes.

Bawdsey - Short-eared Owl over Bawdsey Marshes.

Friday 21st.
Alde Estuary - No sign of the adult Pacific Golden Plover today.

Thursday 20th.

Aldeburgh - A PACIFIC GOLDEN PLOVER was found on Town Marshes this morning just prior to 09:00hrs and remained until 11:17hrs when flew towards Hazelwood Marshes and beyond, also 2 Spoonbill noted. (photo Andrew Moon).

Deben Estuary - Osprey over Kyson Point at 09:45hrs and up Martlesham Creek.

Wednesday 19th.

Minsmere - Single Manx Shearwater South at 12:27hrs.

Iken - Osprey seen at Iken Cliff at 14:00hrs.

Havergate - Osprey seen at 10:00hrs.

Felixstowe - The long staying Wryneck continues to show at LBO.

Bentley - Osprey South over Dodnash ood at 09:10hrs.


Tuesday 18th.

Southwold - 3 Manx Shearwater South offshore prior to 09:00hrs.

Thorpeness - Probable Corys Shearwater offshore + Sooty Shearwater North 11:26hrs & 2 Manx Shearwater noted.

Felixstowe - Wryneck still LBO + Manx Shearwater South.

Monday 17th.

Felixstowe - Wryneck continues to show at LBO. (photo Barry Woodhouse).

Sunday 16th.

Lowestoft Area - A Red-rumped Swallow was seen South over the North Denes at 15:25hrs. Cattle Egrets were seen along the South wall at Breydon & on Share Marsh Carlton Marsh SWT. 4 Black Redstart at Ness Point.

Covehithe - 1st winter Caspian Gull on the pigfields.

Minsmere - Black Tern on West scrape.

Orfordness - Juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper on the NT reserve + Little Stint & 4 Curl Sands noted.

Shingle Street - 3 Whinchat in the meadow by the tennis court + 2 Spot Redshank in the creek.

Bawdsey - Osprey South over East Lane.

Felixstowe - Wryneck still at LBO.

Saturday 15th.

Southwold - Wryneck in gorse within the sheep paddocks at Easton Bavents + 7 Whinchat. Pied Fly by the sewage works.

Minsmere - 3 Little Stint on East scrape, 7+ Whinchat on the reserve & Osprey South late morning.

Reydon - Osprey seen from Hen Reedbeds + 3 juvenile Curlew Sands on the Blyth Estuary.

North Warren - 3 Whinchat.

Alde Estuary - Osprey & 2 Spoonbill Haelwood Marshes.

Snape - Great Egret Botany Marshes

Shingle Street - 4 Whinchat near the tennis court.

Felixstowe - The long-staying Wryneck remains at LBO.

Friday 14th.

Minsmere - Little Stint on the scrape.

Sizewell - Juv/1st winter Caspian Gull + 45 Little Gulls.

Felixstowe - Wryneck still present at LBO on the icky ridge + 4 Whinchat & 3 Tree Sparrows on site.

Trimley Marsh SWT - Juvenile Curlew Sand, 2 juvenile Little Stints & 8 Spot Reds.

Thursday 13th.

Lowestoft Area - An Arctic Warbler was briefly in garden of Tides Reach tea rooms early afternoon. 3 Whinchat on North Denes.

Southwold - Wryneck in brambles on North Marsh by path between boating lake & Mights bridge.

Havergate - 18 Spoonbill, 3 juv Curlew Sands & Little Stint on the RSPB reserve.

Shingle Street - 7 Whinchat present.

Felixstowe - An Ortolan Bunting was seen at photographed at LBO + 2 Wrynecks still.

Wednesday 12th.

Shingle Street - 6 Whinchat & Common Redstart noted.

Felixstowe - 2 Wrynecks still present at LBO + 10 Whinchat noted, nearby Pied Flycatcher in Adastral Close. (photo Craig Holden)

Tuesday 11th.

Blythburgh - Osprey still on the North shore of the estuary.

Minsmere - 3 juv Little Stints on East scrape + 2 Sooty Shearwater offshore.

Thorpeness - Adult Pom Skua South at 10:45hrs + Long-tailed Skua South at 14:25hrs.

Felixstowe - Wryneck still LBO though mobile.

Levington - Osprey over the creek early afternoon.

Monday 10th.

Lowestoft Area - No sign of the Wryneck from Kessingland sluice.

Felixstowe - Wryneck still on the common though mobile + White Wagtail. (photo Will Brame).

Sunday 9th.

Lowestoft Area - Wryneck still by the sluice and showing well.

Southwold - Sooty Shearwater North at 08:00hrs + Black Tern.

Blyth Estuary - Osprey seen from Hen Reedbeds.

Dunwich - 2 Great Egrets Dingle Marshes

Minsmere - 3 juv Little Stint remain on the scrape, offshore a Skua sp was noted.

Alde Estuary - 3 Spoonbil lat Hazelwood Marshes.

Shingle Street - 2 Common Redstart + 5 Whinchat.

Deben Estuary - Ringtail Hen Harrier South over the river at Waldringield. Short-eared Owl over Bawdsey Marshes at 12;15hrs.

Stour Estuary - Osprey seen from Stutton Ness at 13:00hrs.


Saturday 8th.

Lowestoft Area - No sign of the Booted Warbler today but both Common & Black Redstart noted at Ness Point. Wryneck seen just South of the sluice at Kessingland.

Blyth Estuary - Osprey seen from Hen Reedbeds.

Havergate - The juvenile Buff-breasted Sandpiper continues to show well on the RSPB reserve.

Shingle Street - 3 Pied Fly, Common Redstart, 6 Whinchat + Tree Pipit the pick of the bunch of the common migrants noted today. (photo Barry Woodhouse)

Felixstowe - Possibly 2 Wrynecks on the common at LBO + 11 Whinchat & Common Redstart noted.

Trimley SWT - Osprey South over the river.

Friday 7th.

Lowestoft Area - The BOOTED WARBLER was again present today just North of the Birds Eye factory in tamarisk bushes along the sea wall. The bird was showing well during the morning but became more elusive as the day wore on + 3 Whinchat & Pied Fly in the area. Cattle Egret still Carlton Marshes. (photo David Carter).

Blyth Estuary - Osprey seen sat on a post at the West end of the estuary.

Alde Estuary - 7 Spoonbill Hazelwood Marshes + 2 Osprey.

Havergate - The juvenile Buff-breasted Sandpiper was again on the RSPB reserve at 17:00hrs + 11 Spoonbill & 4 juvenile Curlew Sands present.

Felixstowe - Wryneck again at LBO though would go missing for long periods + Pied Fly & 7 Whinchat.

Levington - Osprey over the creek towards Shotley at 08:30hrs.

Cavenham - 2 Whinchat on the heath.

Thursday 6th.

Lowestoft Area - A BOOTED WARBLER (3rd for Suffolk) was found in tamarisk along the sea wall just North of the Birds Eye factory at 10:00hrs and remained throughout the day though generally elusive. Pied Fly at The Hollies, Kessingland. (photo Brian Small).

Blyth Estaury - Osprey viewable from Hen Reedbeds.

Minsmere - 3 juv Little Stint on East scrape this evening + 5 Curlew Sands (4 juv & 1 ad) & 4cy Caspian Gull. 10 Whinchat on the konik field.

Thorpeness - Pied Fly at the old caravan park.

Alde Estuary - 2 Osprey Hazelwood Marsh + 6 Spoonbill. 2 Spoonbill on Town Marshes + Pied Fly.

Havergate - Buff-breasted Sandpiper seen on the RSPB island mid morning + 4 Curlew Sands, 3 Spoonbill & Common Redstart noted. (photo Peter Kennerley).

Felixstowe - Wryneck present at LBO & trapped early evening + Purp Sand on the point.


Wednesday 5th.

Lowestoft Area - Black Red at Ness Point + 5 Black Tern North offshore. 2 Common Redstart at The Hollies Kessingland.

Minsmere - Little Stint & 4 Curlew Sands on East scrape.

Sizewell - 8 Black Tern (ad & 7 juv) off the rigs + 2 juv Arctic Terns.

Slaughden - Whinchat near yacht club car park.

Alde Estuary - 2 Spoonbill Hazelwood Marsh + 2 juv Curlew Sands.

Shingle Street - 3 Pied Flys today (2 Battery Cottage & 1 by the allotments).

Bawdsey - 2 Common Redstart by the lagoons on sea defences.

Felixstowe - 13 Whinchat & 2 Common Redstart at LBO + 2 Bonxie North offshore.

Tuesday 4th.

Lowestoft Area - Cattle Egret still on Carlton Marsh SWT. Sooty Shearwater North off Corton + 2 Black Tern.

Blyth Estuary - Osprey seen on the estuary viewed from Hen Reedbeds today.

Minsmere - 2 Little Stint & Great Egret the highlights from the reserve, no sign of yesterday's reported Purple Heron.

Alde Estuary - Spoonbill Hazelwood Marshes.

Shingle Street - Pied Flycatcher in the garden of Battery Cpttage.

Bawdsey - Juvenile Garganey still on the lagoons at East Lane.

Monday 3rd.

Lowestoft Area - The Barred Warbler was again present and showing well by the sluice. (photo Andrew Moon) .

Minsmere - Purple Heron seen in flight from Bittern hide late morning + Gt Egret on Island Mere.

Shingle Street - 5 Whinchat seen in the meadow opposite the tennis court.

Levington Creek - Merlin.

Wherstead - A male PALLID HARRIER was seen over arable land at TM.390.143 along the road from A137 to the Tattingstone White Horse public house at 12:15hrs before heading off over Holbrook Park.

Sunday 2nd.

Lowestoft Area - Cattle Egret remains on Carlton Marsh SWT. The Barred Warbler was again present and showing well on occasions at Kessingland sluice.

Shingle Street - 6 Whinchat present.

Felixstowe - Pom Skua seen South offshore from LBO + Common Redstart & Whinchat noted on the common.

Pakenham - Whinchat at Puttockshill.

Saturday 1st.

Lowestoft Area - Barred Warbler at Benacre/Kessingland sluice and showing well on occasions. Wryneck seen within the grounds of The Hollies holiday resort, Kessingland in NW corner. Cattle Egret again on Carlton Marshes.

Covehithe - Juv Caspian Gull on the pigfields.

Minsmere - Great Egret from West hide.

Thorpeness - Pied & Spotted Flycatcher at the old caravan park.

Aldeburgh - 15 Whinchat on Town Marshes.

Shingle Street - 5 Whinchat.

Bawdsey - Common Redstart by the quay. Juvenile Garganey at East Lane..

Felixstowe - 4 Whinchats at the ferry. Common Redstart & 2 Whinchat at LBO.

Stour Estuary - Osprey seen Stutton/Wrabness opposite Stutton Mill. Female Goosander on the River Stour at TL855455.
